Armed Forces / Discharge from RAF code 593 (4a)
« on: Thursday 23 February 17 13:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I have come across many posts questioning discharge under code 392, but I can't find any under 593 and was wondering if anybody knew.  I am hoping it may shed some light on the character or circumstances of my grandfather.
Thanks

Thanks so much for your help!  Now I know where I can find the original in NRS, but I will also check with the Aberdeen Family history group (of which I am now a member).  Fingers crossed I can access the list and that it helps in my search.
Thanks again,
ali

Banffshire / Help to find a resource?
« on: Thursday 03 November 16 18:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there.  I am trying to find out where I would get a look of the John Smith (alias Gow) manuscripts which I believe includes a list of some 300 people living in Tomintoul area in the early 1800's.  Can find a few references to it, but none mention how to find it?!
thanks in advance,

Yes, sad indeed.  We were along there today.  Seems like history has repeated itself as the original cottage also burnt down.

Banffshire / Mary Gordon of Independent means - Tomintoul
« on: Monday 12 September 16 12:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I have a Mary Gordon and an Elspet McDonald living in two separate parts of a cottage/croft called Lagganvoulin (mile south of Tomintoul).  They are recorded on the census report of 1841 as being 'Ind' - presumably this means of independent means.  They are both aged 60.  I know that Mary Gordon was married for a few years to a Stewart/Stuart and that she did have a few children to various men.  She was the daughter of John Gordon, and she had two sisters Ann and Jane.  Her grandfather was likely a George Gordon (of Laggnavoulin) who is mentioned in Victor Gaffney's 'Lordship of Strathavon'.

I am struggling to trace her line to find out where her Gordon's came from (so many of them in the area and surrounds).  I am intrigued that she should be living 'independently' - was she a relative of the Duke?  Also, that her immediate neighbour (Elspet McDonald of same age) was also independent.
Any help much appreciated.

Sorry, me again.  There were very many children brought to Tomintoul and surrounding farms.  Have just found a census report from 1891 and from just 3 houses on the main street of Tomintoul there were 10 boarding children - one from Selkirk, the others from Glasgow.  All 3 neighbouring houses had boarded children, including several siblings.  6 in one house, 3 in another, and one in the last.  Staggering.  You wonder how the schools coped (- they all list them as scholars.)

Just a snippet of info about how the boarded out kids may have been treated.  A year or so ago I met and chatted with an old man in Tomintoul who had been boarded out from Glasgow as a child.  He had been sent to a farm a few miles out of Tomintoul.  He had said that he was treated extremely well and welcomed as part of the family.  It was nice to hear.  I have a property just south of Tomintoul and the families of this house (and it's near neighbour) both boarded children from Glasgow.  Very often they were siblings, but I haven't yet managed to trace what happened to them - did they stay and integrate, or did they move back to Glasgow?

Sorry, me again.  If you are still interested in Balnedan, check out a book of old photos of Tomintoul (it is a recent publication and easily found online).  It has two old photos of Balnedan - one with a female child in it - with a name, but I can't remember what it was!

Ha!  I thought you were in Indiana, USA!!
Yes Delachule would just be the actual farm, not an area.  I drove slowly past today to have a look.  Travelling south with the prefab on my right.  There is obvious signs of where the house was on the left - you can see the flat footprint very clearly.  There is also a substantial shed type building immediately to the North of it which I guess was part of the farm.  I will indeed try to find out about who has been there more recently - although my neighbours have only been there for 17 years, not as far back as the 1989's, but I am sure they will know who to ask in the village.
Thanks for the info about Betty - I will have to look at it again - but I don't think it is 'my' Betty.  Although it might be my William Stuart - will have to think it all through.  My Betty was a McGregor at Delachule and although her son was James Stuart, he took his fathers name.  Maybe she did become Betty Stewart/Stuart, but this was not her maiden name - she was a McGregor.  Sadly the 1841 doesn't give relationships to the head of house.  I suspect she was probably a servant or a more distant relative.
Will have to check if we were Johnstons or Johnsons - can never remember.  They were the female line, marrying my male line 'Grey's'.  All over northumberland, tweed mouth, berwick, ord.  My mother is still in Berwick, and her cousin did all that side of the family.
