Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: George Broomhead Any census Look-Up Please

I think that Mary Ann Green may have been Charles 2nd wife and he had been married previously to yet another Mary Ann.

As you say, the marriage cert. to Mary Ann Green will sort it, bachelor or widow.

I had no luck at all with the Census, I'm afraid.

I was puzzled because Arthur is registered as Arthur Broomhead (GRO ref Dec 1847 Sheffield 22 618). As George didn't marry Mary Ann Green until 1850, Arthur should have been registered as a Green if she was his mother.

It would seem that Charles could have been already married to someone else when Arthur was born?

I checked earlier marriages for Charles Broomheads around Sheffield and found one Dec 1846 Ecclesall Bierlow. The possible partners are Elizabeth Thorpe, Ann Lockwood, Mary Ann Homer and Mary Ann Ashton.

I then checked for possible deaths of female Broomheads Dec 1947-Dec 1849. There are no Anns or Elizabeths registered in Sheffield/Ecclesall Bierlow but, guess what, there's a Mary Ann Mar 1849 Sheffield 22 493.

He couldn't possibly have managed to marry 3 Mary Anns could he???????

Can you give the references for Census and GRO Birth refs for any of the Wraggs?

I've tried looking for the first Samuel who you say was born 1876 in Sheffield but can't find him on 1881/1891/1901 Census with a father Samuel & mother Mary. When did he marry?

GRO only has references for Samuels born Mar 1875 Ecclesall, Sep 1875 Sheffield or Jun 1879 Sheffield. Do you have his birth cert. to verify the 1876 info?

The only one I can find that has Samuel/Samuel is this in 1881 at Lambourne Sq, St Philips, Sheffield

Samuel Wragg 50 Scale cutter
Elizabeth 39
Jane 18
Sarah 14
Charles 11
Ellen 9
SAMUEL 5
George 3
Mary 3 months

Same family in 1871 at Garbett's Buildings (off King St)

Thomas Baugh 40 labourer born Wellington
Emma 28 Wellington
Mary E 8 Wellington
James 4 Dawley
Caroline 1 Dawley

I think you really need to get Thomas Baugh's marriage certificate to check his father's name and make sure this is the correct family.

I've been trying to check births. The only Mary Amelias I can find registered around the right time in the Huddersfield district had the surnames Marchant and Shaw. Both of those can be found in 1861 with their parents. (I was thinking she may have been born before her parents married and therefore took her Mum's maiden name)

It looks like Mary Amelia wasn't the name used for registration but it doesn't appear to be Amelia Mary either.

I've also checked 1861 for variations of Gledhill but can't come up with anything better than what's already been found.

I think all the Sheffield Parish registers are at the Sheffield Archives at Shoreham Street. I've not used them so don't know what services they offer.

Do you know where South Crosland is? I can't find it listed in my Atlas.
