Thank you. I have replied to your message. James joined the Indian Army before WW1 and served until the mid 1930s. He was at one time on the Governor of Hongkong's staff A couple of yesrs ago i was able to get his service records from the British Library. He died quite young.
He is buried in his wife's family plot with the Crenshaw. His daughter is also there. She was only in her 20s when she died, she was a teacher.

Sinann,  Thanks too for the link to the dissertation.  It is fairly recent and I've not seen it before.  Just glancing through it I see that prisoners were transferred from Mountjoy to Maryborough and it is likely that is why Bob's grandfather went there too.  Thanks again

Hi Sinann

My fil was born at 46 Mountjoy Cottages, as was his younger brother.  The elder one was born at  39 Innisfallen Parade which was close by the prison.

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat.  I think it is quite likely that your g-grandfather knew my father in law's family.  My fil and his brothers were all born in the early 1890s while he was at Mountjoy.  We know, from the prison correspondence register which is held at the Irish Record Office in Dublin, that he went to Maryborough after 1901.  By 1911 they were in Belfast and Robert was a trade warder at Crumlin Road.  They remained in Belfast after retirement and from there the 3 brothers all joined the British Army.  The prison cottages at both Mountjoy and Portlaiose have been demolished.  The Mountjoy cottages were demolished to build the women's prison.
Records for prison staff are hard to access -  we were told (although it was a few years ago now) that there is only the correspondence register accessible for research.
I am guessing that you are in the States but  contact with http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ may be helpful.  Good luck with your research - Ellen

Thanks.  I am not sure.  I thought I read somewhere that the records are closed for 75 years which would just take us to them being open.  I think I will have to wait a bit and do some more research/message Kew as I may not have time to get out to NA anyway.
Best wishes, Ellen

Thanks Shaun, I have got the pdf of that and is what I quoted from (the copy and paste from the pdf wasn't accurate! I knew that he served in the York & Lancs with my fil. As they were both born in 1896 they are long dead so can't ask them!  :D

Armed Forces / Court Martial records
« on: Thursday 07 March 19 16:38 GMT (UK)  »
I haven't been on this forum for a long time but I know where to come for help.  I am hoping to access the record of a court martial held in April 1941.  I have the Gazette entry as the officer was cashiered.  (London Gazette 29 Apr 1941)

"Y. 6- L.R. Maj. G. C. Wilmot (11781) is cashiered by sentence of a Gen. Court-Martial. 11th Apr.1941"

I think it must have been pretty serious for this during war time.  He was my mil's first husband and served in the York and Lancaster Regt.
I am going to London at the end of April if I thought that the record was available at the National Archives or elsewhere would go to access it.  I can't see any reference to it online.
Has anyone any idea how I can find out details please?
Thanks in anticipation, Ellen

Hi, Good to hear from you.  I will check against my Wilmot tree later to see if it is up to date with your information.  I recognise some of what you have written.  My husband's half sister is Carilon Dene Wilmot, daughter of Gerald Cusack and my mother in law, Sheelagh.

With thanks, and best wishes, Ellen

Donegal / Re: No Burial Register
« on: Tuesday 30 December 14 10:07 GMT (UK)  »
Since my last posts I have been back to Muff and found that Frances McConnell (nee Brooks) is buried in the CoI churchyard in Muff in the McConnell grave with her husband and in laws. There is a small exercise book which served as a register and is now back in the church office at St Peter's in Derry which serves the group of parishes.   My mil and fil's ashes are now scattered there too.
A cousin of Bob's was one time minister of Greenbank Presbyterian church and he confirmed that there was no burial register when he was there in the 1970s.

I haven't been on Rootschat for some time - good to be back!
