Ireland / Re: Belfast records Look up?
« on: Monday 05 September 05 18:00 BST (UK)  »
Thank you both for your help.

I have, in the last  couple of weeks, been able to find out a little (marriage date of grandparents) from some info my mother in law sent to me.  I don't think she knew what was in the boxes she sent!  They were married in Muff and my husband has spoken to the rector there who has confirmed the entry in the marriage register so we have sent for the certificate.

We are still unsure where my f-i-law's brothers were born, but probably in what is now the Republic (he was born in Dublin). We still think that  his mother died in Belfast.  We think his father died in Londonderry.  Like a good many other families it's something of a detective story and one answer prompts a different question.

Thanks again

Ellen

The Tamar is the river which separates Cornwall from England!  I did know a boy called Tamar a few years ago.

The Common Room / Re: Taking photos of houses - what's the etiquette?
« on: Saturday 16 July 05 18:31 BST (UK)  »
I was taking a photo of my grandmother's house in Stratford on Avon some years ago. I had been showing my daughters, then aged about 10 and 13, where I used to visit as a child.  (she died in 1966)  I had always wanted to see how her cottage had been modernised as even in the 1960s she had no electricity, hot water or indoor sanitation.  There were gas lights downstairs, but you had to take a candle up to bed.

As I was taking the photo a couple came out of the house and I felt obliged to tell them what I was doing and why as I was standing outside on the pavement and pointing!  They were a young American couple who were working in UK for a year and renting the house.  They invited me in and I was on the point of politely refusing when I realised that I was being given a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the house as I had always wanted!! I did go in and was able to see how it had been modernised.  It was still recognisable and the couple were fascinated to hear how it had been in my grandmother's day.  She had lived there since WW2 until she died.

Most people are quite pleased to know who has lived in their house in the past.

Hi Janice

I bumped into the Mays at the Royal Cornwall Show and they were interested to know that you were researching the family.  I think THey said that the Miss Mays were his aunts.  They are happy for you to get in touch with them.

I have a Hustley Duggins who was my ggg grandmother.  She is also shown variously as Hursley, Ursla, Ursula and even I understand Priscilla.

Elsewhere there is Hezekiah Dishley and Hepzibah Downes.  She has only a tenuous link with the family and was, I think, sister to my g-grandfather's step-father.  That is unless Elisha Downes proves to be the natural father of John Faulkner - that's a theory I have which may, or may not, ever be proved.

Another small investment in 1837 online has revealed that she died in the June qtr of 1927 - the over 70 bit was correct, my mother's impression not so (for once)

I found my mother-in-law's parents marriage in India in 1891 in 1837 online, also the birth of her half sister and death of her father's first wife.  We hadn't known of their existence until then.

When we mentioned this to her she did know about it, although  she hadn't until she was an adult.  The sister was a lot older than her as she was the youngest of the 10 siblings (and is now 90 herself)

On 1837online there are regimental bmds and also consular ones.  The pages of the indexes cover a longer time span than the usual quarters as there are fewer entries each year.  I thought they were well worth a look.

Hi Janice

I do know them and will mention your query when I next see them.  However, I don't see them very often as I live in the village and they are quite near to Maudlin.  Will get the churchyard info for you when it's not raining!

There are Dunns still in the parish too.
