ED2/1/275 3404  #404 film roll Z305  - A while since I saw the file, and his birth place was not the purpose of my enquiry, but I have a feeling  that Michael Ambrose was born in Ireland. Anyway, I will locate it and let you know what birthplace is indicated.

Marriage of Michael Ambrose to Jane Joyce 5 Nov 1875 has witnesses Daniel Griffin and E H J McCormack (which would seem to be close relative of adult age) . Michael spent a few years in Victoria as a teacher on the goldfields and applied for a teaching position on return to Tasmania.

Possibility -

Born to James and Marion E Hamilton, Sydney
Jane E 1873
Marion C 1878

Jane E Hamilton m. John T Wilcox 1913 Condobolin

Death of Marion E Hamilton 1922 New Lambton

Arthur C Boxsell would seem to be from family of dairy farmers on the south coast - Berry, Meroo.

Australia / Re: GAUNT, Edward Cecil - born Tasmania, died ??.

I think the 2008 means that the death record was created in that year, for a death in 1927 - so the 2008 would be excluded from the database search which would just look for years when applying  the time qualifier for access to records. Sounds even more intriguing - what happened in 2008 for the death to be recorded, and by whom?

Emily Callow was buried at the Charles St cemetery in Launceston - from funeral notice in Examiner 13 March 1910. I would think Robert was also buried there. I am sure this cemetery no longer exists.

For some reason I have lost the first page of letters for this enquiry, so trying to remember names - I think you need to get a death cert. for Peter Clark, d. 1930, which would presumably have information provided by Charlotte. It will identify children born to Peter. I can see one child, Claude H Clark b. 1892, d. 1921 at Mosman to Peter and Anna, after which it would seem the association with Charlotte began. I think you are uncertain about children born to Peter and Charlotte?. With the names and ages of children, you can work back to locate birth records. Steere could be Charlotte's married name or maiden name. Women with complicated domestic arrangements had a problem about registering births. Such an ancestor of mine used all options for children's surnames - biological father, mother's maiden name and mother's married name.

I agree that a marriage certificate is the best option for first-hand information. The John Mawson - Mary Sullivan couple looks promising. There is an Sydney Arthur Mawson d. 1936 Redfern, parents John and Mary. The Denning children of James Henry and Margaret Mawson include Arthur and Sidney. But the marriage cert. would be the most reliable record.

Australia / Re: Correction - Marys age at marriage
« on: Tuesday 16 February 10 01:14 GMT (UK)  »

Mary is 21 at marriage - misread my own scrawl. They have a child born in Zeehan 1894. The west coast was a very isolated place in those days and I have had numerous instances of absence of births, but children who turn up in school attendance records, complete with date of birth and parents names. So the missing son might have been born there. The children of Robert William, died melbourne 1945, will be harder to find as the births will not appear in any indexes - too recent - similarly marriages most likely.
Wm Robert Beare and Trixie Johnstone m. Woollahra (NSW) 1926 so the three sons would be young when father died. I wonder if Trixie remarried in Victoria, or maybe they returned to NSW where there might be her family. I cannot see any of the three sons marrying in NSW or Victoria. I suspect that it is getting too close to living people for public records to find them - maybe phone book entries?
