Australia / Re: Thomas DODD Tasmania

The original marriage cert. is among film of Methodist Church records, in this case Burnie area, in the Tas. archives office. Civil records after 1900 are not available to view on film, but church records for most denominations are - Catholic records seem to be with the diocesan office in Hobart. I think the Sesquecentary book would have been compiled from several sources, including contributions from local families, which would include perpetuated myths and errors. Accessing records then would have been very time consuming without databases and images on film. I think James who married Ada Woodward is definitely from the John and Ann family.

From their marriage certificate 22 Sep 1913 - Parents for Thomam Dodd are John Dodd and Ann Dodd (people did not always get the idea that mothers maiden name was needed). Thomas is a widower whose wife had died in 1907, 6 children living, none dead. Thomas and Ann both living at Burnie, Thomas born Burnie, Ann born Scottsdale. Witnesses B. Newett and Jane Saltmarsh. Methodist service.

On enlistment at August 1914 he gives his age as 23 9/12, which would give DOB at November 1890. The NZ paperspast site, Timaru paper, has William Dailey being fined for traffic offence September 1889. It is a less common spelling of the name and could be his father.

When James Dodd, husband of Ada (Woodward) dies his obituary in the paper has him as brother to Mrs Carty, Mrs Bugg (Rebecca Dodd m. Wm 1888), Mrs Byrne (Elizabeth Dodd m. Alfred Byrne 1892). Rebecca and James are named children born to John Dodd and Ann McMahon (also unnamed children). So I think that Thomas is of this family. The marriage cert. for Thomas's first marriage would not show parents name, but the later second marriage would.

The obituary in the Mercury on his death in 1904 gives a source as the article written for the Gregory's wedding anniversary the year earlier, July 1903. It would be information that James and Mary Ann would have seen printed in the paper, and no doubt contributed to. So it would be more accurate than the other birth information. Very little information on Tasmanian birth certificates, and ship of arrival of parents is not recorded. It is not included in indexes.

Hello Silky,
I can see that the reformatory list of boys was not relevant but can you tell me how you know that your convict arrived in 1834 if there are no records for him. This might be a point to start from - work backwards from the information that you have. What is his name and do you have an age also?
