Waterford / Re: Shine family of Dungarvan
« on: Friday 02 August 13 10:42 BST (UK)  »
Thank you. I will go away and see if I can work out which one is meant. I will dig out the original papers. I don't have much to go on. John was born in Stradbally Waterford and had Aunts in Dungarvan and Cappoquin. His g/f was RIC in Stradbally and his aunts mostly married policemen also. So they would likely to have been known to and have known the Forrest and Shine families , although not travelling in the same social strata ( I would think).

By the by did you allready have the information on Col James Matthew: a very impressive profile. what a tragedy to lose 3 sons . I also saw that Dr James Alexander Forrest died in a Tram accident in Melbourne!

My parents and grandparents did not tell us anything about the family but they did seem to keep in contact more than I imagined. One of Johns Aunts went to Halifax, Canada. when I kept losing track of them I discovered that they would get the boat back to Ireland for all sorts of family occasions! Then return to Canada!!! Then they decided ( in the one letter that we had) that it was too cold and they were going back to Ireland for good. They did just that after I tracked their lives everywhere and found them hiding back home!!

If only our families had better records for us!!

Know it is a while since your post so you may have found all your information BUT while researching my grandfather I found a copy of a telegram(1913) sent to Dr and mrs Forrest in Charters Towers QLD. In short he was from a director in QLD railway in response to help my g/father with a job as he had been in the same regiment as the son of Dr Forrest. My g/father James Anderson was born Stradbally 1888 and was in Royal Irish Regiment before self discharge in 1908. he came to Australia sometime between 1908 and 1913. I saw your post while looking for a connection. I saw this obituary posted http://tablet.archive.netcopy.co.uk/article/31st-october-1931/20/obituary for Col J Shine died Waterside, Dungarvan.
"COLONEL J. SHINE, C.B., R.A.M.C. Colonel James Shine, C.B., M.D., died last week, we regret to state, at his Waterford residence, Abbeyside, Dungarvan, aged seventy. He was the eldest son of Mathew Forrest Shine, and was educated at Queen's College, Cork. As a military doctor he served in the South African War • and he had also been with the troops in Burma and the dorth-West Frontier of India. During the Great War he was a Deputy Director of Medical Services. He was three times mentioned in despatches, and in 1918 received the honour of the C.B.; three years earlier he had been given the rank of Colonel. His three sons all fell in action during the campaign. Colonel Shine married Kathleen, daughter of Mr. JohnWilliams, of Dungarvan, and was left a widower in 1924.—R.I.P."

I am still trying to find the connection between John Anderson (my grandfather) and the Forrest son of Dr Forrest in Charters Towers.

Waterford / Re: Kate Mary Sargent

I cannot be 100% sure of Ellen. I base it on the fact that there is an Ellen born ( Name Ellen Sargint Birth date: 08 Oct 1870 Birthplace: Cappoquin, Waterford (Sub District) Ref. : 817 Parent : Michael Sargint & Anne Tracy (Familysearch records) )

The death for Ellen in Waterford death registers :
Date of Death:    16 Oct 1870
Place of Death:    Mill St
Name: Sargint, Ellen, Sex: F, Age at Death:    1 Week, Rank: Carpenters Child, Condition: Child
Cause of Death: Convulsions
Informant: Tracy, Mary
Qualification:  Present at Death, Residence: Castle St

So the Ellen born with named parents Michael and Anne fits the name/age( 1 week) of the Ellen death in 1870.

I averaged out the age variance for the girls in the 1901 census but yes you are right.
It seems a very big age difference , even for census records? I fully expected to find registrations But I can't find any civil records for the 1901 girls.

I cannot work this scenario at all. Even by the rest of my Irish family , this one is puzzling.

The 3 daughters that I mentioned who are on the 1901 census are different to the ones that you have provided and I had found also. These are 3 additional  daughters , I think. They are 10 years older than the original set (Anne died 7 months, Cornelius 7 months, Ellen 1 month).
Older siblings James Matthew, Kate Mary and Mary (whose birth records I don't have ) came to Australia. Admiittedly I cannot find any deaths for Margaret(1869)  and Bridget(1865) BUT could they both be so wrong with ages? Oddly enough they are both different to the Margaret and Bridget  census by about the same 9 ish years!!!
Helena , I cannot find any Civil or familysearch record for. do you know if all records are digitised?

I am wondering what I could do next to try and clarify. Picking your brain!

I looked at the Waterford Library Death registers as advised.  The Michael in the 1901 census was a widower and died in 1902. There is an Ann who died in 1893 who also lived in Mill St and was a carpenters wife .  Anne was 10 years older than Michael . The dob for the 3 older children who came to Australia are a bit suspect as the passenger lists has the sisters marked a few years younger. (There are a couple of the other daughters still awol though).

This Michael had additional  3 daughters in the 1901 census so I looked for their births in the Civil Registers as they would be born Bridget 1876, Margaret 1878 and Helena 1880 . BUT I cannot find them. Am I doing something wrong.

if I could find them then I could at least get a birth certificate to see if they are daughters of the same Michael and Ann.

Anyone have any suggestions as why they don't seem to be in the register?

Thank you for that. I saw these as well. I assume that they are Michael Sargint/Ann Tracy's children excpet that I have seen 2 Cornelius born . One to Michael/Ann and one to Ellen Tracy. I cannot get a picture from it though as I cannot find a marriage for Michael/Ann or their births/deaths and cannot make the link to the other SARGENTS in Cappoquin.  I think that the spelling SARGINT as opposed to SARGENT is not a typo as it has been repeatedly used on the births in Civi registrations. The christian names are not consistent with SARGENTs in Cappoquin. Bamboozled still.

Hello , I am also looking for this Sargent group. Kate Mary came to Australia along with a sister and brother James Matthew Sargent. I acquired a certificate for the births that are civil for the older children and they are born in Castle Street, Cappoquin. BUT still cannot find anything of parents Michael and Ann Tracy. Have not found births for Kate , James (pre civil). It is a mystery . Have  you advanced any further.  Sargent in Cairns who married into my Andersons ( also ex Waterford) here in Australia. My cousin is direct descendant of James Matthew and we are at a loss to where they came from and went to. Also they don't seem to be related to the other Sargents in Cappoquin.  We have complete history of family here in OZ but no luck yet in Waterford. Hope to hear from you and join the dots.

Cambridgeshire / Re: Rowlingsons in Linton Cambridgeshire

Hello from another confused family tracer. I have just got to the point of unravelling Susan Emma Gayleards life. Discovered she came to Australia twice and married twice. The 2nd marriage to George Richard Rowlingson in Brisbane in 1867. I am now so confused about his name . As you  have ordered the actual records for them can I ask you to check I am barking up the right tree with my Susan being married to your Rowlingson!
She was born Susan Emma Gayleard born Somerset, came to NEW Australia with her parents and then they went back. she married a Richard Clarke in Somerset then came with husband and child to Brisbane. He drowned and child died and then I "believe" she married Mr Rowlingson.
Is this the right connection?
Thanks so much

Clare / Re: Offer of 'Look Ups' for Miltown Malbay, Kilfarboy and Kilrush.
« on: Thursday 13 June 13 06:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello . Is your offer still current? I am looking at Timothy O'connor and wife Mary Kane. They had children who came to Australia 1880s. The ones I am certain of are Mary born 1855 Miltown Malbay (from obits and marriage info) and Ellen born about 1862 Miltown Malbay and also a Martin.

From marriage certs etc Timothy is stated as a farmer. Could you look up any vitals on him and the family as I am sure that there are more children also.

If you can help then I will be sooo grateful as I am at a dead end and not very clever so far at where to find Clare records for these dates.
