I am not sure of the second initial for Fanny, Herbert's mother. I have also not been able to find her on the 1871 or 1901 census.  Her husband, Henry is missing from 1881.  Neither have I found a marriage for Henry and Fanny.  I am still looking  ;)

Thanks in advance.

The Common Room / Baptism - Fictitious Father
« on: Wednesday 29 August 07 16:49 BST (UK)  »
I know that it was quite common for illegitimate children to "invent" a name for a father when they married but has anyone come across a fictitious father at a baptism?
I have the birth certificate for Isabella Headington born 14 April 1840 at 4 Chicksand Street.  Mother is Hannah Headington.  No father is named. A fellow researcher has found Isabella's baptism at St Mary Whitechapel. Isabella Eddington, mother Hannah, address Chicksand Street, but also a father, Richard Eddington, a Butcher.
In a small rural parish it would have been difficult to try to hide illegitimacy at a baptism in this way but maybe it was possible in a busy London parish.
I am particularly interested in views on this as I think that Hannah Headington's older sister may have, similarly, invented a father when her son Richard was baptised in the same parish in 1835.

Kent Lookup Offers / The Lewin Letters
« on: Wednesday 11 July 07 17:46 BST (UK)  »
I have recently bought a  copy of the books called "The Lewin Letters."  They relate to the Lewin family which was based in the Eltham area of Kent from about 1800 but spread to London, Devon, Hampshire and Sussex.
Many members of the family were in the East India Company.
I am happy to do look ups.

There is a NZDF file relating to the service of Kindersley Camillo Montague Lewin in the South African War.  According to the NZ Archives site access may be restricted.
Before I follow this up further does anyone have experience of viewing  files relating to the South African War? What sort of information are they likely to hold?
I would have to order the file as I live in the UK so I really want to know whether my money is likely to be well spent  :)

United States of America / Emigrants from St Ives, Cornwall
« on: Sunday 27 May 07 13:30 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters

I have recently become a volunteer at the St Ives Archives and am starting a project to research St Ives people who emigrated to the US.  I hope to use some of the information at our open day which is planned for September.
I am currently going through passenger lists and trying to trace people through the censuses.
Does anyone have ancestors from St Ives who would be willing to share their family information?
This is a link to our website, so that you can see what we do.

Hoping to hear from you.

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Pearson - Marlow Baptism
« on: Saturday 21 April 07 17:39 BST (UK)  »
I have a Caroline Pearson (sometimes called Cara) who states on the censuses that her place of birth was Marlow in about 1827.  I believe her father was Henry Shepherd Pearson.  An old family tree says she was either born or baptised 28 July 1827.
Can anyone confirm for me please?

The latter death is on FreeBMD but I am not sure that the transcription is correct

Thanks in advance.

Armed Forces / Lovell - RMLI
« on: Tuesday 06 March 07 14:48 GMT (UK)  »
William Lovell married Alice Joy in 1895.  He was a Corporal in the RMLI based at Chatham.
I cannot find William or Alice in the 1901 census nor can I find a death for Alice.
William, I thought, could be involved in the Boer War but is it likely that his wife went with him?
William was born 1872 in Goudhurst, Kent.
Any help greatly appreciated.  :)

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / Baptism Bury St Edmunds 1821 - HEDDINGTON
« on: Thursday 23 November 06 13:39 GMT (UK)  »
The IGI has a baptism as follows

HANNAH HEDDINGTON

 Birth:  17 DEC 1821

Christening:  24 DEC 1821   Saint Mary, Bury Saint Edmunds, Suffolk, England

Father  RICHARD HEDDINGTON
Mother AMY ALBON

Is anyone able to confirm this for me in the PRs and to give me  any other information recorded..  I am particularly keen to know the occupation of father Richard.

I am sure this is a London family so I am also intrigued as to what they were doing in Suffolk. :)
