Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: West Ham 1871 Census

Thanks Casalguidi

In 1881 Rosetta and John were at 4 White Hart Cottages.  I am fairly certain that the parents had died by then.

Birthplaces are
Joseph City of London or Bishopsgate
Mary Ann St Lukes or Bishopsgate
All the children Bethnal Green

The Leyton family not likely to be the right one therefore.

What info is required to get the best out of the 1871 index search?

Does anyone have access to this census please.

My Bateman family seem to have moved from Bethnal Green between the 1861 and 1871 censuses.

In 1881 some of them are at 4 White Hart Cottages - are they there in 1871?

Names and ages of the people I am looking for are:
Joseph Bateman 50 Bootmaker, Mary Ann his wife 50 and children Rosetta 20, Thomas 18 Cabinet maker, Joseph 15 Toymaker and John 13.  There could also be a very elderly John Bateman 80+ Bootmaker.

Any help much appreciated.

I found these:
1 Lincoln Street (Mile End Old Town)
John Dillamore H 32 Postmaster b Walthamstow
Mary 31 W b Cardigan
Mary 6  Dau b Stepney
Ann Phillips serv 12 or 14 House Servant b U K

I Champion Place ( :(Writing appalling but have done my best!)
 Frederickh Janson H 38 Solicitor b Hackney
Elizabeth W 24 b Aplington? Exeter
Agnes E Dau 2 b Middx Hackney
Emmeline E Dau 1 b Middx Hackney
Sarah Janson Visitor Widow 61 Annuitant b London Holborn?
Rebecca Marriott Serv 36  House Servant b Northampton Cransley?
Sarah Benge Serv 34 House Servant  b Suffolk Finchingfield?
Amelia Dallimore Serv 34 House Servant b Essex Leyton
Emma Ives Serv 20 House Servant  b Essex Mannuden
Richard Godoley? Serv 15 House Servant  b Essex Walthamstow

Amelia is rather older than you expected.  All the servants are unmarried.

Hope this helps.

It does look as though the 1861 entry you want is missing though as Lincoln Street sems to be the one in Mile End Old Town.

I can't find a Lincoln Street in Hackney.

There is one listed in Mile End Old Town but there is a note in the street index to say it is missing from "ED10 or 11".

Can you confirm the address.

I have the 1861 census but no index yet.

Do you have an addess for the Dec 1861 birth?  If so I will look it up.

Otherwise come back to me in a week or so when, hopefully my index will have arrived.

Thank you both for your help.

Do you have a ref or address for the Hackney entry please?

The Bateman family you found is unfortunately not mine.  So that I can think about what to do next, can you tell me what areas the index you used covers?

My Bateman family are living at 19 Union Street (also called Hope Town) in 1861.  By 1881 the parents seem to have died and some of the family are still in Bethnal Green whilst others have moved to West Ham.

Can anyone find any of the following in 1871 please (ages stated are what they would be in 1871):
Joseph Bateman Bootmaker about 50
Mary Ann about 50
Rosetta about 21 (but in later censuses she knocks quite a few years off her age!)
Thomas about 18 (could be named Herbert- his first forename) a cabinet maker
Joseph about 15 a Toy maker.
John about 13

They could be with an older sister Clara Phillips aged about 25 and married to John.

There is an outside chance that Joseph Bateman's father is still alive.  He was living with the family in 1851 and 1861 and is another John Bateman. He would be about 87 though!

I would be grateful for any help on this.

Thanks for trying.  They may have died - significantly I can't find George in the 1881 census.
