The Common Room / Can I find residents via searching the address in 1939 register?
« on: Saturday 02 October 21 16:59 BST (UK)  »
Sorry if this is a really dim question, and I'm sure that I ought to know the answer, but I've half an idea that some members of a family may be living in one part of a certain road, in 1939. I'm not quite sure of which members, nor am I certain of the exact address on the road - but other than landing fortuitously on the right road and going forward and backwards with arrows ( and that probably wouldn't work, because I'm unsure of the "married" surname) is there a specific route to follow? Thanks for reading this query.
(I'm seeking Bispham road, Southport Lancs)

Having thought that I could do it, I created a very simplified tree of one line of my ancestry that someone I know is interested in, and that we both share. She is an Ancestry member, too.
I have been given access to other people's trees in the past, and I allowed someone access to my main tree, I think - but I can't remember how to do it - and is it possible to manage to give access to it for only that one tree, not any others one has on Ancestry? I can't actually seem to come upon any help from Ancestry itself.
Guidance / advice would be most welcome. I'm feeling dim about it.

The Stay Safe Board / Boris's 4.00 broadcast today 19 December 2020
« on: Saturday 19 December 20 16:30 GMT (UK)  »
Anything we didn't guess?
Will people really take notice?
Why were people allowed to think mixing would be fine?
Why can't they say, if they don't know?
-and remember, there are lies, damn lies, and statistics, and we all know that.
Laure Keunssberg (sorry, not sure of spelling) is a gem! More power to her microphone.

The Common Room / Ancestry playing up, today 25th Nov?
« on: Wednesday 25 November 20 15:33 GMT (UK)  »
Is anyone else finding that Ancestry seems to be in a bit of a tangle today? "This site cannot be reached" etc when trying to access people, and very slow and muddled?
-Or is it me?

The Stay Safe Board / Boredom in Lockdown. Am I alone?
« on: Friday 06 November 20 15:01 GMT (UK)  »
I'm so very bored already, this time. Last time I spent most of my time in the garden, which did it a lot of good, and me, too. I managed time out there this morning, but it was too squelchy to do much.
But I'm bored, even with reading, and I'm one of those people who always has a book on the go, in every room in the house.
I seem to be hitting nothing but brick walls in family history research, I've written the letters to the people I usually send letters to with their Christmas cards, doing the letters and sending them on their own, early. I've been doing crosswords like mad. I'm not into jigsaws.
There's nothing much on telly, and I don't like watching it during the daytime, in any case. There's not the lovely obsession of the Rootschat Panto (that seemed to die out last year), I've used up all my stock of sewing fabric, and done all the washing and ironing as a record turnaround. I can't find wallpaper I like, in order to do some home decorating whilst tied to base, although I've been intending to do that for weeks....
The cats think I ought to copy them, and doze in a cosy corner, but that doesn't help. I've even done all the housework I can find to do. And re-organised bookshelves a bit. Oh dear, oh for something to fill my mind with joy.
How are others coping?

The Common Room / "Hettie"? who could she have been
« on: Thursday 05 November 20 17:36 GMT (UK)  »
I've been trying to think of names other than "Hester" that "Hettie" could be a pet name for. Any suggestions, please?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Lambing time
« on: Tuesday 13 October 20 15:50 BST (UK)  »
This is an unmounted small snapshot, taken about 1946 or 7, and has my late mum on it with her friend and a couple of lambs.
If it's at all possible, could it be tidied up a bit, and made sharper than it is? I'm afraid I haven't the negative, and the actual photo is ... well, no better than my scan of it.
I'm not wanting any kind soul to try to add colour, but I'd appreciate it if someone has the time to fiddle with it a bit.

The Common Room / "Who do you think you are?" October

I'm probably behind the times, but I spotted something earlier today about David Walliams and Ruth Jones (?) being in next line-up. Anyone know the rest of them?

Ireland / Surnames and religions?
« on: Friday 14 February 20 16:51 GMT (UK)  »
Is there any way of narrowing down the search for Irish ancestry, when the people concerned have not given a place of birth other than "Ireland" for most census returns when they lived in England?
Are particular surnames especially associated with Roman Catholicism, or Protestantism? I have Paton/ Payton/ Pateen, which I'm fairly certain from other evidence, is at least in their case associated with R.C., but Cummins and Keating and Anderson..... needles in haystacks spring to mind!
