World War One / WW1 lookup request de Ruigney
« on: Wednesday 01 July 09 11:11 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to de Ruigney's book on soldiers who died in WW1 (I think that is how you spell it).

I am looking for Ellis Sard Moore who was in the Royal Field Artillery and died 25 July 1917 age 36.  I have his entry in CWGC site which was most useful and have found his grave on another site.
I believe he is mentioned in this other book/website and would like to know more about him and how he died.

He left a young wife Florence who died in Sept 1917 leaving four young children to be brought up by their grandparents.

Thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Address lookup in 1861 amd 1871
« on: Tuesday 09 June 09 11:03 BST (UK)  »
Could I have an address look up for

21 Rahere St, Goswell Road, St Lukes  in both 1861 and 1871 census.

In 1868  William Joseph Gallington married Catherine Mary Jane Nolson and the address given as 62 Rahere St.  They had a daughter Catherine born in February 1870 and died 12 May 1870. The informant on both certificates was Catherine Mary Jane Gallington of 21 Rahere St.  Was Catharine MJ living in Rahere St in either 1861 or 1871.
on 17 May 1870, my gt grandfather Joseph William Gallington was born at Bridgewater Square with his mother shown as Mary Jane Gallington formerly Allen and father William Joseph Gallington.  In the 1871 census I can not find either Mary Jane, Joseph William or Catherine Mary Jane but can find William Joseph living with his parents in Tibberton St and it says he is unmarried!!!  He had had two partners and two children !!  He pops up again with Mary Jane and the rest of the family in 1881 and every subsequent census since. Wondered what happened to Catherine Mary Jane as it would appear he has not married Mary Jane Allen as no marriage has shown up  and he died in 1911.

I just thought that the address might give me some clues.

Thanks

Australia / HUNTER family in Tasmania
« on: Saturday 23 May 09 02:54 BST (UK)  »
Looking for a William James Hunter who, according to family lore, went to Tasmania as a 13yr old and working back from his death certificate, this would be about 1853 ish.

Been through migration passenger lists with no joy. Any ideas.

There is  a William J Hunter on the electoral rolls - would this give a more accurate birth date or place of birth. Do not know parents names or where they were from. Family lore suggests north England or Scotland.

William J married into a well known Tasmanian family and the wedding was documented with family background of the bride only.

Any ideas of where to from here ?

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Law Stationers - what are they
« on: Saturday 23 May 09 02:49 BST (UK)  »
I am tracing a William Allen shown in the 1881 census as a Law Stationer employing 7 men and 3 boys.  My gt gt grandfather was a Law writer - William J Gallington as shown in the 1881 census and wonder if William G was employed by William A.

There is a marriage for William J to Catharine Mary Jane Nolson but subsequent birth certificates for all of his children (13) show the mother as Mary Jane Allen. There is only one birth showing Catharine as mother (Catherine born and died 1817).

It could be that William never married Mary Jane Allen as there is no marriage entry and he died in 1911. Wondered if he just moved in with the bosses's daughter as Mary Jane is shown in the 1871 census as living with her parents, William Allen.

Is there a Kellys or Pigots directory that shows William Allen. Also wonder if anyone knew what a law stationer did - would they need a Law writer ??

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / 1871census lookup - GALLINGTON
« on: Saturday 30 August 08 09:16 BST (UK)  »
I am again on the hunt for gt gt grandad Joseph William Gallington born May 1870 but still cannot find him in the 1871 census so have taken another tack.
His birth certificate shows Mum as MaryJane Gallington nee Allen and dad is William Joseph Gallington, His address then was 10 Bridgewater Square,
I have found dad living at Tibberton St Islington with his mum and dad and showing as unmarried. He was married but to Catherine Mary Jane Nolson in 1868 but she too seems to have disappeared.

I have looked up for Joseph Allen instead thinking he might be living with his Mum Mary Jane and found two Joseph Allen's about the right age. One is in Poplar   ref 37  97  and the other in Holborn  ref 8  328.

Would someone be able to check these two Joseph's out and see if he is with Mum, Mary Jane was born about 1851 in St Lukes, Middlesex according to the 1881 census.  I do think that she and William J never married but continued to live together and have about 10 kids.

thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1891 lookup - MEMESS
« on: Sunday 17 August 08 10:19 BST (UK)  »
Could I have a lookup please for Jane Memess born  1874 Holborn. Cant find her in 1881, not many Memess's listed so may be a spelling error so thought if she could be found in 1891 then might get her parents. She married in 18985 and have found her okay in the 1901 census.

Thanks very much
