I keep thinking I should subscribe to Ancestry, so last week tried to take the plunge. Only wanting the UK data, I noticed that VAT was charged. Living in Australia, I thought perhaps I shouldn't have to pay VAT, so sent a support query to Ancestry.

After 3 emails back and forth I was told
1. I probably want to subscribe to the US collection
2. I should call the US during their business hours
3. I could write a letter (I thought I had already done that)

Today I received a 20% off  offer by email so decided to subscribe, regardless of the VAT. After completing all the details, not only did I get 20% off, but I was not charged any tax.
If they had told me that last week, I would have paid 20% extra for the subscription - so I guess pointless support options are quite useful at times.
