Hi Nat

There's one in St Cuthbert parish, Bedford, as follows:
HO107/1751, folio 609, p 11
Address Newnam Street.

Edward Wharton, head, 49, Gardener, born Beds Carlton
Sarah Wharton, wife, 50, born Beds Clifton
Thomas Wharton, son, 20(I think), boot and shoemaker, Beds St Pauls
Elizabeth Wharton, daughter, 7, scholar, Beds St Pauls

Any good?

Going back a bit...the 1803 National Defence Muster list for Carlton lists a 48 year old William WHARTON, who was a gardener with 2 children still under the age of 10 [older children wern't counted as they were expected to fend for themselves]

Later, on the 21st April 1817 in the next parish of Stevington, a 19 year old William WHARTON volunteers for the Militia.

Natalie

I think the second William who joined the Militia aged 19 in 1817 was Edward's brother?

The IGI site is down at the moment but I did see a christening for William [jr] in 1798 which seems to fit in with age on Muster list & census in Surrey?

The WHARTON family appear to have lived in Carlton for some generations; on the A2A site there was a Sam WHARTON, yeoman, and his wife who were charged with not attending church in the 1660s [I expect they were baptists as many people were? ]
