1851 Census look-up please - BROOKS family - completed thanks!
« on: Friday 28 October 05 18:13 BST (UK) »
Hello!

I am researching my BROOKS family who may have been living in Lambeth in 1851. The 1861 Census indicated that the family lived in Lambeth and that their son was born there.

I am searching for George BROOKS(also found as BROOK) who would be around 19 years of age, possibly born in Bermondsey. George may have been living with his parents who are believed to be James and Frances BROOKS of Camberwell, Surrey.

It is thought that George married Mary Ann JONES early in 1851 at Newington and that their first child, George was born that year at Lambeth.

By September 1851, this family was living in Camberwell on South Street.

I hope that this is enough information to locate my great-great grandfather in the 1851 Census. Thank you.

Wow - what a speedy response! Thank you.

It certainly appears to be the ones whom I am searching for. I imagine that you spent a fair bit of time looking for this lot, and I appreciate it.

I hope that you are as successul in finding your family as you have been with mine.

Wow - the responses have been coming fast and furious - much to our dog's dismay as I have been glued to the computer and she feels that a bit of attention is required.

I appreciate the information on the date of enumeration as I can now figure out a more accurate birthdate for George Jr.

Do you happen to know if an 1841 Census is in existence for the same area?

Yes, Mary, 1841 is available but normally on disc or film at a records library & not normally indexed, so it's a question of finding the right area (big task for the Camberwell area) & going through it page by page :(

Thanks Jane - appreciate the information about the 1841 Census. Nice knowing that it is available but will require a fair search to find these folks. When I get enough information about the later years, perhaps I will just make a visit to one of our local Family History Centres and order in the films.

Happy hunting!

I have some Brooks from Bermondsey but James Brooks b1862 and no name of the parents. Could there be a connection?

Hello Lucy!

There could be a connection...I am always open to possibilities. I don't have any James BROOKS born in 1862 in my database but I do have one born in 1854 in Bermondsey, Surrey County and a James born about 1806 in Camberwell, Surrey.

Do you have any other details which might help?
