Searching for Grandfathers War Records
« on: Wednesday 25 August 04 23:03 BST (UK) »
My Grandfather Christopher James Colbert born October 1895 Swansea S.Wales Served in the 1st World War.

I have a photograph of him in his uniform (attached). He is aged between 19 - 23 (more likely the latter) in the photograph. He looks as though he was a Private, however I am not 100% about this.

I would love to find out his regiment and any vital records on him. Any ideas where he would have enlisted etc? He continued to live in Swansea until his death in 1969.

Most places need the basic information on an individual (such as his Rank, Service Number etc) which I do not know.
Appreciate any help
Kindest Regards

Jen L Colbert

Thanks for that information. I have the original Marriage Cert of my Grandparents (in 1939) and there is no such number within the document.

My Grandfather (born 1895) married my Nan (born 1912)who was 17 years younger than him, so the marriage was not during the war years.

Thanks for that info though, I didn't know some people had their service numbers within their marriage certs, a nice fact to know :D

Hope your research is going well ;)

Also I checked on the CWGC website, and there is no entry for C J Colbert (The closest match is Charles Thomas Colbert) therefore that would suggest that C J Colbert survived the war.

Hope this info helps.

By the way there are about 107 COLBERT medal cards on Documents Online, I don't know if have already included them in your COLBERT One Name Study.

There is only one card Jen, I think the soldier must have moved regiments.

Have you tried this forum?

www.1914-1918.org/forum

They are really, really helpful and know their stuff.  They have helped me on quite a few occassions, even one guy taking a photo of a headstone for me in Belgium.
