Hi Chris,
Thanks for your welcome and reply.  Yes, that is me on GR.....looking for that same couple.  I have looked through Bewcastle and Stapleton parish registers but never found a marriage.  Maybe it is time to send for some films and take another look.....might have missed it years ago.
Thanks for checking your files.

Hi Linda
there is a gravestone at Stapleton for Jonathan and Elizabeth Steele, it says Elizabeth died at Bewlie Mains, Scotland in 1899. Have you tried looking for her death certificate on scotlandspeople? Scottish death certificates usually name the parents of the deceased, so you should be able to find some more details about which Kennedy family Elizabeth was from.
cheers
Bridget

Thank you, Thank you!  I didn't check Scotland's People before....don't know why I didn't think of it because that is where Elizabeth's daughter Margaret Murray (nee Steele) lived in Bewlie Mains, Lilliesleaf, Roxburgh, Scotland.  So I now have Elizabeth's death cert and I do love those Scottish certificates because I now (after looking for years) have her parents names: William Kennedy & Mary Twaddle. Does the gravestone at Stapleton give a death date for Jonathan?  Can I ask where you got the information?  Is there a transcription of this cemetery? Thanks again!

Hi LindaLily

Sent a reply to your PM!  Looks like we are cousins!!

Must admit I havn't done any research for months - hit brick wall after brick wall on every line and became a bit despondent!  But looks like we have a "live" branch to investigate again!

Hi Lindalily

My name is Simon Steele. Jonathan Steel, whom married Elizabeth Kennedy is the great grandson of John Steel, my direct great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather.

I am not sure when they married, but I will look around for you.

thanks

Hi Simon,
I still have not been able to find a marriage for my Jonathan Steele to Elizabeth Kennedy in about 1848. But wondering if you can help me to confirm that my Jonathan (1827 - 1892) was the son of Jonathan Steele (1778-1861) and Margaret Goffet (1783-1849). Any information you could share would be great.
Thanks,
Linda

Hi Lindalily

Jonathan is indeed the son of Jonathan and Margaret Goffet as there is a baptism at Stapleton for him in June 1827.

Jonathan's father grandfather was John Steel, born in 1717 and died in 1816, he is buried at St Mary's church in Stapleton and his gravestone can be seen today. He is buried alongside Jonathan, Margaret, his wife Ann and one of his children.

Thanks Simon!
I appreciate you checking this for me. I am beginning to think that Jonathan and Elizabeth were not married! Or maybe a record will show up sometime in the future.....I'll keep hoping.  :) I have gotten away from tracing my paper trails at the moment as I am concentrating on DNA results from Family Tree DNA. I have tested myself, my parents, my maternal uncle, my maternal great aunt, my husband, his aunt and his father!!  So I am busy trying to make some sense of all the results and all the Family Finder (autosomal DNA) matches. Wish me luck.
