Gabriel`s to Massetusetts
« on: Wednesday 02 November 05 14:52 GMT (UK) »
Charles Gabriel born 1873 Liverpool England & his older brother Millington James Gabriel b1870 can be found in America in early 1900`s they both travelled via Belfast Ireland
I have no evidence of them traveling to America, I have looked on Ellis Island & Castle Garden web sites!

I found Millington James Gabriel (JNR)Born 1893 or James as he became to be known on Ellis Island as he returned to England in 1915 to serve in the first world war then returns with his new wife his cousin Ethel  in 1920

But still can`t find any info on the brothers leaving for America if you can advise in anyway please do!

Sorry found Charles but no other family members i.e. wife Clara or children

Ellis Island is ONLY for ships coming into New York. Your family may have arrived at a different port. Do you have evidence to them coming into NY? If not, you need to search elsewhere!

Have you searched indexes for other ports? They are microfilmed. you can get a list of film numbers (NARA & FHC) at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/nara_indexbyport.shtml

Scroll down to the state you want and click on the link, then find the film # you need

Have you looked for naturalization records? That 1910 census says Charles has his first papers  and so does James. Go to http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/ for help with online links AND research guides that tell you how to get those records offline.

You may be in luck because naturalization petitions after 1906 have information that has been verified and matched to an immigration record. An immigrant who arrived after June 29, 1906, could not naturalize until the government located their immigration record (a passenger list). So you will also find a  Certificate of Arrival  and this will have complete details as to ship name, date of arrival and arrival port.

Here's an early Christmas present :)  You can get the full passenger list by sending for it from FHC or NARA. That will give you who he was going to in USA, his intended state of residence, where he last lived, his occupation, etc

Charles Frederick Gabriel Age: 29 years  5  months, arrived at Boston, Massachusetts   on 22 Oct 1904  on the CRETIC from  Liverpool, England

You've got an exact date now so you get a lookup from NARA or get the filmed list in to your nearest Family History Centre. Go here http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/nara_indexbyport.shtml and look for the link for BOSTON film #s.

Enjoy!

Okay this one's from Santa...

James & Clara Gabriel arrived 18 Oct 1931 from Liverpool, England   in Boston Mass on the  Britannic

They're on the "List of US Citizens" so you know they naturalized before 1931. If you get the list, it will have more details including WHERE and WHEN they naturalized! Then you can get those nat papers to find out when they came in the very first time (and where)

Obviously not their first arrival, looks like your family were quite the travellers! It also seems your Charles' had been in America before his 1904 arrival too.
