Elias GEORGE: is it an 1881 double entry?
« on: Thursday 03 November 05 11:48 GMT (UK) »

Hi

There are two Elias Georges on the 1881 census with the identical birth place, year and occupation - they are also the only ones living in Derbyshire at that time. Their residences are well apart, but presumably people did get written down twice?

There is one Elias George on FreeBMD in the whole of Derbyshire (1837-1900s), born in 1853.

In his father's household, listed as being married:
Elias George, b 1854 Chesterfield, son, tailor, Chatsworth Rd, Brampton, Chesterfield

And then there is:
Elias George, b. 1854 Chesterfield, head, tailor, 132 Boyer St, Derby St Werburgh, Derby
Hannah George, b. 1848 Chesterfield, wife
(and 3 children all b. Chesterfield)

Do you think I can assume they are the same man? Might he have caught the train in Chesterfield and got home to Derby in time to get included on both census forms?

Cheers
Koromo

The enumerators didn't actually see all the people they wrote down.  They recorded the information they were given.  I can see Elias Father telling the enumerator that he was with them and then a different enumerator going to Elias home and speaking to his wife and asking who was in the family.  She probably gave them Elias name even though that night he was at his fathers.

Oh, of course! Now I think about it, the enumerators couldn't possibly have physically viewed every member of every household - they'd be collecting the forms for months! :D

So ... do Elias and Hannah George have any more children in the 1891 census?

Thanks

Hi,

My name is Ellen and have just come across your query re Elias George.  Elias's daughter Margaret Hannah was my grandmother, though I never knew her.  I assume the family lived only for a short time in Derby as they were back in Chesterfield for the 1891 census.  As you say, he was listed with his father, Charles, in 1881 so maybe Charles added him as his son though he wasn't physically there.  Are you any relation to Elias?
