Im looking for a navel officer can you help???
« on: Friday 04 November 05 21:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi people I was wondering if someone has access to the 1851 census and can give me a hand in looking for a possible link that would be for me a major breakthrough. Before you ask just go and buy access to it on ancestry.co.uk you tight !!!?@, well I have, shall we call issues with my closest and must wary of the internet [and releasing any money to someone you cant see.] generation known as the mid fourty generation lol [my parents]. So basically for me its a dead end as far as my parents credit card details go, unless you can help.

Well i was looking through the free 1881 census and came across an ANN MARSHALL aged 90 living at 3 crescent scarborough Yorkshire. Her status was widow of navel officer and was also born in gainsborough lincolnshire [i think].  I still have very strong family links to scarborough and know the crescent isn't your average home if you understand me! This got me thinking [military buff with very little military linked ancestors] I became interested in who the husband could be, and what rank would give him the pay to own a place for his wife to retire in well into her 80's with plenty of servants. It must be a traceable rank.

from previous research by now deceased members of extended family I have a brief family history dating back to 1703. in this there could be possible links to this character ANN Marshall with my direct relations brothers James Marshall born around 1789 and Francis Marshall birth date unknown. I'm thinking in that time period some Napoleonic war connection possibly!

However thats where the trail went dead with my parents reactants to sign up to ancestry.co.uk and all.

Then i came across this site!

so I was wondering if any of you guys do me a favor by having a look for me it would be brilliant?

In summery is there a link between

Ann marshall born 1791 residing in scarborough with
my James and Francis Marshall born around 1789 also residing in scarborough

I'm hoping the census could shed some light on this.

If you can help your opening up a new chapter in this family tree for me! so please anyone with any access help me solve this most curious of possible links.

P.S if theres anything i might of missed that could help, just give me a mail and ill try and help.
Marshall, Hopkins, Marlow, Frank, Burns, Doy, Haggerstone, Frankland, Bulmer, Hoggard, Baker, Chapman, Walker, Stonehouse.

Hi,

Don't think you'll like this, but

Ann Marshall is living at 3 , The Crescent in 1851 , a widow with 3 servants.

There is no sign of a James, or Francis living anywhere in Scarborough

I'll keep looking

I think you're gonna like this!

Thought I would look in the Times as you said the Cresecent in Scarborough was 'posh' and there is an entry for
Tuesday, Mar 30, 1886; pg. 1; Issue 31720; col A Deaths
"On the 21st March 1886, at her residence, 3 The Crescent, Scarborough, ANN widow of CAPTAIN JAMES MARSHALL, R.N., and daughter of the late William Etherington, Esq., of Gainsborough, in her 97th year. Born July 1, 1789

I'll see if theres anything else
best wishes

I would imagine that this is Ann Etherington in the IGI [Gainsborough is in Lincoln] with the fathers name of William as the christening is just a few days after her stated date of birth

ANN ETHERINGTON
Christening:  05 JUL 1789   Gainsborough, Lincoln, England
Father:  WM ETHERINGTON    Mother:  RACHEL

and there's a marriage in the IGI as follows to the brother of your Henry Marshall?

ANN ETHERINGTON
Marriages:
Spouse:  JAMES MARSHALL    Marriage:  27 MAR 1817   Gainsborough, Lincoln, England

The only Henry Marshall born Scarborough on the 1851 census is a shipwright in Whitby who has fallen on hard times.
Henry Marshall 62 born  Scarbro, Yorkshire

The BVRI
gives 5 children for Henry Marshall and his wife Ann all in Scarborough

MARSHALL, Elizabeth Birth Date: 24 May 1782 Christening Date:21 Jun 1782
MARSHALL, George   Birth Date: 23 Jul 1784 Christening Date: 23 Aug 1784
MARSHALL, Henry Birth Date: 12 Sep 1786 Christening Date:   8 Oct 1786
MARSHALL, James Christening Date: 23 Aug 1789
MARSHALL, Mary Christening Date: 29 Nov 1793

Henry seems to be the only one showing on the 1851 census. No Francis born Scarborough.

Regards
Valda
