Hi Yewtree,

I also have relatives from Alderton. Mine are the Cook family.
I have a booklet produced by St Giles church in Alderton to help raise funds to restore the roof.
It lists the census of population of the village taken in 1827 when there were 199 inhabitants.

I think these may be your family

Cottage 1 - John Andrews and wife and daughter who is the wife of Jas Willis and a child - 5 inmates
Cottage 20 - Isaac Andrews and wife & 6 children - 8 inmates
Cottage 24 - Wm Hobbs and wife and 6 children, one chamber - 8 inmates
Cottage 25 - Robt Andrews & wife & 4 children - 6 inmates

They have Alderton parish records in my local record office . I can check the marriage for you when I go next week.

Hi nashua
Many thanks for your reply to my query of the marriage of William Hobbs and Jane Andrews. Yes, the William Hobbs, wife and children at cottage No 24 in the village in 1827 are my family ancestors.
William was in the Army, the Wiltshire Militia, then the 23rd Regiment of Foot, from 1803 until 1807 when he was discharged on to a Chelsea out pension as had a leg amputated. in September 1807.
Thank you for your offer of looking for the place of marriage  in the records for me, as I live in Australia now, it is very difficult for me to access local English records
looking forward to hearing from you.
Best Wishes.
Yewtree.

Hi Yewtree

I've been to Bristol record office today. The Alderton records only go back to 1837 :( so I couldn't check the marriage. Did see the burials in Alderton
William Hobbs 30/4/1837 age 53
Jane Hobbs 6/8/1853 age 70

There were no records for Donhead St Andrews.
You will need someone with access to the Wiltshire records office to check further.

I may get to Alderton churchyard soon , so will take a photo for you if I find a headstone.

Sorry I couldnt be of more help

Hi Nashua
Thanks for your effort in Bristol R.O. and for the exact date of deaths of William and Jane Hobbs of Alderton. I appreciate all your help. I don't know if there will be a headstone at St Giles churchyard, William was only an Ag Lab and a Chelsea pensioner,so not much money to spare.
Thanks again.

Hi Yewtree,

The dates were the burial dates , not date of death.
I will check for a headstone, some of mine had them & they were also ag labs.

Hi Nashua,
Message read, Thanks for the information duly noted. I will be most pleased if you would check gravestones for me in Alderton for any Hobbs name, when you go there.
Thanks again.

Hi Yewtree,

I went to Alderton this morning on a very cold frosty & foggy day. As you suspected there were no headstones for the Hobbs family or at least none that could be read. There are lots of stones there where the inscriptions are totally worn away.

regards

Hi Nashua,
Many thanks for looking for headstones re the Hobbs in St Giles,Alderton, I visited there in October 1990, it was raining and blowing half a gale and I couldn't find any either. but I must admit it was not a very thorough search. I did have a look inside the church, it is a beautiful little church. I took a few photographs for my records.
Thanks for your help.
