Was his son in law really his step son?
« on: Saturday 05 November 05 21:33 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if it was usual for the census enumerator to describe a step son as a son in law? I dont know if this was a mistake or could have been the standard way of describing such a relationship. Has anyone else come across this? I am referring to an entry in the 1861 census.
       Many thanks.   Linmey.

Yes, it's quite usual to see 'in law' for 'step' on census returns.

Hi,

My Great Grandfather, William Dyer, is described as a son-in-law in the 1861 Census for East Grinstead...even though he's only 13!! (Of course he was a stepson:-)

Had me puzzled for a while though...

Cheers, Romilly.

Thanks for that. I thought it was probably the case but you never know.
              Best wishes.   Linmey.
