1841 census my only hope
« on: Saturday 05 November 05 22:52 GMT (UK) »
This is driving me balmy.  I'm trying to find the recorded births of a whole family.
Their name is Lochart (Lockhart), James and Christina nee McKelvie(Christian)born 1791 Kilmory Isle of Araan.  They were married in Ayr Ayrshire on 29 Nov 1811.
Children:
Alexander
James
Leslie may have lived Isle of Mann
Catherine married James Neilson 1845 Gorbals Lanark
Agnes married John Stevenson Gorbals Lanark
Mary born c1823 came to NZ with mother by then a widow.
Janet born c1825 came to NZ with mother
Isabella Ferrier born c1832 came to NZ with mother
I think I need a miracle or the 1841 census as they arrived in NZ Nov 1851.
Much thanks for any help with this. I've searched physically the IGI and OPR and on the internet and on Scotlands people site.

Hi Cerjoy,
               Lochart family in 1841 index.
There are no birthplaces, addresses or any other info. in the index.
Another point to remember, in 1841 census, most ages were rounded down to either ?5 or ?0.

Census taken Little Govan, Glasgow

James Lochart age 55
Christina age 45
Ann age 25
Mary age 20
Christina age 19
Janet age 17
Catherine age 15
Isabella age 12
Alexander age 7

Hi

The 1851 census has the following at 3 McNeil St, Gorbals.  Parish Gorbals, Enumeration District 34, Page 8

Christina LOCKHARD age 59 born Bute, shopkeeper
Janet LOCKHARD age 28 daughter, born New Mills, Ayrshire, Cop Maker (sic)
Isabella LOCKHARD age 21 daughter,  born New Mills, Ayrshire, Winder
James PERCY age 34, Lodger born Annan, Dumfriesshire Wool Spinner

This is a transcription, you would need to see the image to confirm the information

That could be them, depends on the date of the census, no mention of her being a widow.
Christina Lockhart, Mary Lockhart, Janet Lockhart , & Isabella Ferrier Lockhart arrived in New Zealand  in September 1851 aboard the "Simlah" which sailed from London.
Christina also had a daughter Isabella who came out in 1840 and married John McGregor.
Isabella Ferrier Lockhart, while mentioned in Christina's will, is not referred to as a daughter as the others are.

The 1851 census was on the 30th/31st March 1851 so you would expect them to be on it.

The 1851 census also has the following

Mary LOCKHART age 30, born Newmill, Ayrshire, House Maid

She is a servant at 20 Elinbank Cres, Barony, Glasgow with Archibald G LANG & family.

Unfortunately these transcriptions do not include marital status so it would be necessary to see the original images on SP to confirm that Christina was a widow.

The information certainly matches the 1841 census.
