Harry,

Thanks for your help.
I just wanted to confirm that this was the family of Charles Butler.

Thanks again, Steve.

Steve,

You are welcome - just realised that I missed off David's age - should read 34.

Steve,

I've had a look at 1841 and can't find David and Elizabeth in Upton, although there are several BUTLER families in the village.   Had a look at Chilton in case they were with her family - no luck.

Harry,

Thanks again for your help, it’s very much appreciated.

Could there be an error or ommission on the 1841 census ?

I found the marriage for a David Butler, in 1838,Wantage, Berkshire on FreeBMD, David and Elizabeth’s children were all born in Upton, between 1839-1859.

You mentioned that there are several other Butler families living in Upton, on the 1841 census. Are there any that could possibly be the parents of  David  ?

I’ll send off for a copy of the marriage cert.

Kind regards, Steve.

Steve,

It could be that I've just missed them - the census images can be difficult to read (there no index) and you do go word blind occasionally.

There are a couple of possibilities for parents and even a grandparent.   If you get the cert - I or another Rootchatter will be able to take another look.

Hello.  I am brand new to this site and in fact, only signed up because I saw this thread and am hoping to find more information on my 3rd great grandfather.  I believe he may be the Elijah Butler listed in this thread.  The only hard evidence I have on him comes from a marriage certificate from 1873, in Virginia, has his father listed as David and his birthplace as Upton, Berkshire.  No mother listed.  A 1930 US census has an arrival date as 1861.  I've no idea if he came alone, but, he would have only been about 14 at the time.  Is there any way to verify that David Butler and Elizabeth Belcher are indeed his parents?  I'm having trouble navigating the Free BMD.  Is Elijah listed anywhere after 1861?  Could he have gone to the US with a sibling?  All help is GREATLY appreciated.  This is my father's line.
