This is a very old thread. I will contact the original poster by private message in case notification is turned off.
1861 Montague, Lanark, as McKegue, shows children Charlotte, Hugh, Robert, Neil & Charles W....There surely is a gap between Charlotte & the next child....awe...wonder if they lost some along the way.

and Father Hugh is Wes Meth, mother Isabella is CofE  :)
It says parents & Charlotte were born Ireland, though...

1871 Bothwell as McKeig http://data2.collectionscanada.ca/1871/jpg/4396741_00267.jpg
and they have another child William http://data2.collectionscanada.ca/1871/jpg/4396741_00268.jpg
again both say born Ireland, father Hugh is Wes Meth, mother Isabella is CofE

Here is a family mini bio, where family history says the first four sons died of small pox ( birth / death Scotland) Some family members are also listed in the links for the children as well...

Thanks very much for your information and please keep me in touch. I can tell you that I believe that my great great grandfather was born Ireland as I noticed on the 1851 Scottish Census that my great great grandmother Isabella McCaig was listed with a father-in-law named Robert and we are having a "dickens" of a time getting that family. I am starting to look at the Irish side now to see if anything falls in place. Isabella was Irish and I can't find yet birth or marriage to Hugh McCaig but I know from my family that piece falls into play. Anyway thanks again for your information and please stay in touch. If you are researching this side you may be a relative and possibly we can collaborate. All the very best and have a very Merry Christmas from a McKaig in Canada. :D

Regards
Bayfield

Yes they appear to be both born Ireland but of Scottish origin, much as they both had children everywhere but Ireland where they were born...so you'll likely need to look for parents in Scotland if we are to believe what they have stated on census.
May I see a full transcription from the Scottish census where your family appears? I also just noticed on Canada census, Neil isn't listed as born England but in Scotland

I have a family tree on Ancestry.ca It is public and you can see my relatives but I will add the link for Isabella McCaig who's maiden name is Mcvicar. She always stated that she was Irish but I believe she was a Scot. Here is the census link. http://search.ancestry.ca/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&h=1584329&ti=5543&indiv=try&gss=pt&ssrc=pt_t73716238_p46325157287_kpidz0q3d46325157287z0q26pgz0q3d32770z0q26pgplz0q3dpid  You will note that Robert is mentioned as her father in law which means Robert would be Hugh's father. Or was it Donald Robert and he went by Robert sometimes????? Donald McQuaig and Nancy Brown have been believed as Hugh's mother and father.

Robert McKeague of Glenleary born c1796 (gravestone spelling is McKaeg) so probably too young to be Hugh's father.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
