Godden, Amesbury
« on: Monday 30 August 04 19:19 BST (UK) »
I'm stuck at Mark Godden, whose son, Edward, was born in Amesbury in 1820.  Mark married a Sussex woman, Elizabeth Bannister, in Sussex in 1813, so I don't know whether Mark was a native of Wiltshire or of Sussex, but I've drawn a blank in both counties.  Any help would be appreciated.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Hi there,

There are no entries in the Wiltshire etc Marriage Licence Bonds for Mark Godden, but the marriage does appear in the Sussex MI.  He and Elizabeth Bannister married by Licence in Crowhurst Sussex in Aug 1813.  Both were described as otp.  I don't know if that helps you, because you don't know how long he had been otp.  But there is another marriage in the index:

Guestling, East Sussex,  9 Jul 1803: Mark GODDEN m Ann EVEREST, (lic)

Same chap? or a relative?

Nell

Thanks for that - the Wiltshire Record Office found the marriage record but couldn't find anything further back.  I haven't been able to find Mark or Elizabeth in either Wiltshire or Sussex.  The 1903 marriage is interesting - I suppose it could even have been the same fella.  So frustrating when its' pre 1837.
