Thursday quandary - DNA testing
« on: Thursday 10 November 05 07:50 GMT (UK) »
Would someone be kind enough to explain, in layman's terms, the basic principles behind DNA testing and it's relevance to genealogy ??? ???  Please?

http://www.infed.org/walking/wa-shaft.htm

This part was most rewarding.  Not on a personal basis but from a standpoint of genealogical ethics.  I'm in no doubt that there may be some families in society who would wither at being handed such information ;D...The thought that kept going through my head on this one was what would Eichmann and company had done with this little lot?

Extremely interesting document.

Interesting site mc8

Well worth reading.

Was getting my DNA tested with the National Geographic project.  Really good.

I found a website called genebase which allows you to put your tree online for free (rather like GR except that you can't upload a gedcom) and to treat it like a blog.  But what they really want you to do is pay $199 for DNA testing in order to build up a database of each particular name.  If it was being done by an academic outfit I could see the value of it (but not for $199), but as it stands it's just a commercial project.  Still, it's another way of getting your family history out there for people to find.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

The place for DNA is national geographic which looks at deep ancestry ie 100,000 years ago.  Well worth the money for £76.00 or whatever the current rate is for US and Canadian.

After the results come back you are invited to submit to a database which is free.  Any further test you can have at a reduced rate.
