I am now going to throw myself upon the mercy of anyone who can help me!  This is driving me crazy!  I am pretty sure my Grandfather had a brother called John - or at least some relative.  I have two photos of him (he's called Jack) and I also have the Military MBE and some miniature Indian medals, including the MBE.  I have been searching The Times archives all day and can come up with nothing conclusive.  He is the only person in the family tree that I can come up with who could have been in the Great War (my Grandfather was in the police and Fred died in 1904 so that rules them out).  I have had a good look at the MBE silver hallmark and I think it's 1918.  But I can find no record of his birth or anything.

On the positive side I joined the 1837 Online site and found Military records of my Grandfather's birth (definitely Shorncliffe), as well as Frederick Louis and Blanche.  Unfortunately, apart from Blanche's birth I can find out nothing more about her.

I am also hitting a brick wall with my Grandmother's (Edith Charlotte Scott) parents.  Her father was Albert Carlton Scott and his wife was Mary Elinor ......

Why didn't anyone tell me that this obsession would be so frustrating?????

P.S.   I think I also discovered that after my GGF died his widow, Katherine, remarried a chap called William King-Walker and had two more children (and she was a witness at my Grandparents' marriage)

Just to let you know I've had a small chink of light.  I have confirmed that the medals I have belong to John Ferguson and found his medal cards in the National Archives.  Seems he was in Iraq in the First World War (among many things).  There were 6 medal cards in all and one of them had MBE on them which confirmed it for me (as well as being a Second Lieutenant in The Corps of Royal Engineers and all his medals tallying with the cards).  I still can't find out anything about him though.  I have asked Ian Poynz to have a look for me next time he's at the OIOC to see if he can find his birth certificate so fingers crossed!
