Unfortunately for you, you are therefor somehow related to my ex wife but your secret lays safe with me. I am an American, and have recently discovered that, on my mother's father's mother's side, (got that?), we're directly descended from British and French monarchs, and this information came as a complete surprise.  We've since discovered that we're related to the following:

    • Charlemagne
    • Egbert
    • Alfred the Great
    • Duke William I of Aquitaine
    • Edward the Confessor
    • William the Conqueror
    • Eleanor of Aquitaine
    • Henry II
    • King John
    • Henry III 
    • Edward I
    • Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria
    • Philippe VI of France
    • Jean II Of France
    • Charles V of France
    • Charles VI of France
    • Henry VII
    • Henry VIII
    • QE2

... among others.  I believe we're direct descendents from all of them (i.e., they're all our umpteenth great-grandparents), except QE2 and the Henry's, who are cousins.  I imagine there are 10 million other folks on earth who can claim the same heritage, but still, I find all of this fairly mind-boggling! 

We've also discovered that on my dad's side we're related to St. Therese (the "Little Flower").

Rest assured, the bloodline has thinned out enough to where there is nothing saintly or royal about our current generation!  (I'm not expecting any invitations to Buckingham Palace or the Vatican anytime soon!)

 I have just found online a photograph of my GG grandmother's brother in a 1906 Middlesbrough Football Club team photo.

He's sat just down the row from Alf Common, the first £1000 footballer  (How times have changed!)

I still need to do some digging as he is not showing up on the professional players online database, perhaps he was a reserve player. Still, very exciting for me, maybe that's because I am a Boro fan!

Not terribly famous, but very interesting:

Andrew Freemantle (1768-1838) my 5x Great Grandfather and a first class cricketer, who played for Hambledon and England during his career.

George Samways (1895-1996) a ghost-writer for the Greyfriars comics (Billy Bunter etc.), writing over 100 of the stories.  He also had a book of poetry and an autobiography  (Road To Greyfriars) published.

Yet to find any royal connections - I'm sure there must be one somewhere!

I am sure David Frost said he was of Suffolk ancestry and I have Frost ancestors in Suffolk.

David Paradine Frost was born in Tenterden, Kent on 7 April 1939, and was the son of a Methodist Minister.  The family later moved to Suffolk, and one of David Frost's first jobs was on Anglia Televsion, so he was connected with the area, but it doesn't look like the connection goes back that far.

The family tree can lead to everal hundereds of entry's in different generations,maybe along the way you have found that you are related to Alexander Graham Bell who invented the telephone, Robin Hood or even Watt Tiler.

Maybe an ancester did something heroic but was never credited for it. Anyway I thought it may make an interesting question.

Not exactly an ancestor, but ACKER BILK is on my tree.   His Aunty Freda Bilk (born 1898) married my grandfather's nephew, William Hayman (born 1901) in Publow, Somerset.      Good old 'Stranger on the Shore'.
