Hi Sandy

I may have something you could help me with. I'll explain the problem and you can judge for yourself.

My grand mother Agnes Dorothy Priscilla Horner born 1893 in Prittlewell, Rochford, (Southend) Essex had a child Kenneth Raymond born 1927 in Southend to Albert James Eaton born 5 July 1891 Southend. Albert then disappeared and Agnes married my grand father and the rest is history.

My problem is, did Albert marry Agnes? When and where did Albert die?

Kenneth emigrated to Australia under the name of Horner and has 5 sons who are desperate to discover what happened to their grandfather.

I have had a look at 1837online but found it very confusing. If you can help with a marriage and/or death reference I can use to get copy certificates I would be more than please to cover the coat of units used. What do you think?

Regards
Andy

Hi Andy,

Have been trawling the site since your posting but without much success I'm afraid.
There is not a Kenneth Eaton's birth registered in 1926/7/8,
however there is a Kenneth Horner (mothers names also Horner)
so she wasn't then married to Albert James Eaton.
That was in Pancras Dec qtr 1928 ref 1b 110.
I have checked the next 3 years and cannot find a marriage between Agnes and Albert.
As regards the death of Albert James Eaton I have checked 20 years i.e 1950-1970 and there are quite a few Albert Eaton's, but there  are three who match quite closely

Albert J Eaton died Mar qtr 1963 aged 73 Worthing 5m 1224
Albert Eaton      "    June "   1954   "    63  Middlesex 5f 29
Albert Eaton      "    Dec   "   1952  "    60 Poplar 5d 310

Of course he may have died before or after this, it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Don't know that this is going to be much help for you, but let me know if I can do anything further

Regards

Hi Sandy

What a star!

Kenneth never did take the name Eaton so it is looking very likely that his parents didn't marry. Don't know how I'm going to break the news to Kenneth's aussie sons. I will ask them if they have a copy of Kenneth's birth certificate (I doubt they do, as Kenneth settled in Australia on an army demob ticket and passports weren't needed).

Re Albert's death I will start with Worthing and request a copy certificate and see what transpires.

Just one more question, is Worthing in Norfolk or West Sussex?

Please can I reimburse you for the units you have used. Your help is much appreciated.

Many Thanks
Andy

Hi Andy,

Just stopped for a glass of wine to keep me going!
Nearly everyone I know has found skeletons in their cupboard so I shouldn't worry about informing the relatives in Australia, the experts say when you begin that you are not responsible for your ancestors and they are so right.
My own family includes both nuns and publicans and children born out of wedlock- nothings new !
Worthing is in Sussex and thanks for the reinbursement offer but I'm just pleased the credits aren't going to waste.
Good luck
Sandy

Hi Sandyq

Just a quick marriage look up for John Rowley married to Mary Maria Monnington Powell circa 1872-1881 as I know they are together in the 1881 census in Staffordshire around the Hednesford area.  I have trawled for 7 years and cannot find the marriage any where (these are my great grandparents).  She maybe Mary Powell or Maria Powell or as on her birth index when I phoned Dudley -  MMM Powell!  He was born Wolverhampton and she was born Pensnett, Staffs if that is any help.  She was born 1856 and he was born 1858.

Many thanks

Hi Sandy

I've sent an email to my half cousin in Australia explaining what you have found and asked them if they have a copy of Kenneth's birth certificate but every thing is pointing toward the wrong side of the blanket.

Enjoy your wine and again thank you very much for your assistance. Much appreciated.

Hi John,

Have spent quite a while looking for John Rowley and Mary Powell's marriage without success.
Free BMD has all marriage transcriptions between 1866 - 1886
and there is no trace.
Maybe they didn't marry ?
Although the 1881 census says Mary comes from Pensnett
her birth is registered on 1837 as Mary Maria Mornington Powell
Stourbridge 6c 231 June qtr.
The 1891 Census shows they have two sons Albert aged 7 and
Joseph aged 5 whose births I can see registered as Rowley at Wolverhampton, but like I say I can't trace any marriage.

Thanks sandyq

Much appreciated.  I recently found on rootschat that sks looked up 1891 census and they had moved to Rugeley.  I do not have a Joseph or Albert in my tree so may be another couple.  Re the marriage or lack of, I have come to the same conclusion that they did not marry or the register index was lost!  The Pensnett ref is correct for Stourbridge.

I will keep searching as it is the only cert I do not have from all previous and post generations to those two.  Plenty of time yet ....
