How can i spell this differently?
« on: Wednesday 01 September 04 16:08 BST (UK) »
ELISBY.

On the 1891 Census for Leeds ( Ansestry!...yeah!) i found James B Elisby had married Emily M Roberts they were living with her parents at the time or i would never have found her.  They have a 3 month old son Ernest Elisby.   James is from Scotland but it does'nt give a town or anything.  He is 22 and Emily is 19.

Kewl!  i thought nice easy name, should have no trouble finding him on the 1881 census.   Not a chance.!!   There is one Thomas Elisby living in london...thats it!

Search on Ancestry and it brings up only three........my three.

I've tried mis spelling the name Ellesby, Ellisby, Helesby..What other spellings can i come up with?

Perhaps 'Elsby'? Elsby is quite the uncommon midlands surname and is asociated strongly with my Maternal ancestors.

Does your research for this name ever take you into Scotland or Leeds?

If he is from Scotland and only 22 in 1891 then chances are he is still in Scotland at the age of 12, especially if you can't find him online.

Are you using familysearch or the scottish CDs?

I can check when I get home if you want...

Sadly no  :( My Elsby ancestors are chiefly from Burslem and other regions of Stoke-on-Trent. However, a handful show up in Wybunbury, Cheshire.
I wish you the best of luck with your research!!

Hi

Change the 'e' into an 'a' or an 'o' or even a 'u'

Elasby, Elosby, Elusby, etc.

It all sounds the same when you say it.

Now my technique when I have an odd name is to look at the other one.  Roberts maybe a common enough name but in Yorkshire less so.

Here's the marriage which I think solves the spelling mistake......

Name Year Quarter District County Volume Page

CLISBY, James 1890 September Leeds (1837-1929) West Riding of Yorkshire 9b 791
Roberts, Emily 1890 September Leeds (1837-1929) West Riding of Yorkshire 9b 791

And I believe this is JAmes (Jas) in 1881...

James J. CLISBY   Head   M   Male   47   Lambeth, Surrey, England   Hatter
Selina E. CLISBY   Wife   M   Female   30   Lynn Regis, Dorset, England

Frank CLISBY   Son   U   Male   19   Bristol St James   Presser (Tailors)

Selina W. W. CLISBY   Daur      Female   14   Edinbrugh, Scotland   School

Jas. B. CLISBY   Son      Male   12   Edinbrugh, Scotland   School

Christiana E. CLISBY   Daur      Female   10   Liverpool, Lancashire, England   School

Margaret E. CLISBY   Daur      Female   9   Liverpool, Lancashire, England   School

Ellen A. WOODGATE   Sister In Law      Female   21   Dover Lydem Spout   Domestic (Out Of Sit)

Alice S. J. WOODGATE   Niece      Female   1   Leeds, York, England

Now a quick scoot to http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

Will get you James' birth reg will give his parents names inc maiden name of mother and where they married.

There y'go.

How's that!

All the best ,
Pam

Oh and here's James snr possible birth...

JAMES JOHN CLISBY
  Male     Event(s):  Birth:  21 DEC 1832

Christening:  31 MAR 1833   Saint Mary, Newington, Surrey, England
 Parents:
  Father:  JAMES CLISBY  Family
  Mother:  WINIFRED

And his marriage...

JAMES JOHN CLISBY
  Marriages:
  Spouse:  SELINA ELIZABETH WOODGATE  Family
Marriage:  15 SEP 1868   Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

Again Scotlands people would give you all th eparents inc maiden names...

And James snr marriage...

JAMES CLISBY
  Male   Family

Marriages:
  Spouse:  WINEFRED CAVANAUGH  Family
Marriage:  26 APR 1830   Saint Mary, Newington, Surrey, England

So it just turned out to be a brief visit to Scotland.

Cheers,
Pam
