1851 Census for Fleming in South Shields - Complete
« on: Wednesday 16 November 05 08:35 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help with this please. The only information I have is that EDWARD FLEMING was born in South Shields and had a son called Edward or Edmund who would be born around 1840. I think they'd be living in South Shields. I know it's very limited information but heres hoping.

Hi Derek

There are no Flemings in the 1851 Index for SS. Looking at Jarrow and St Hilda's Marriages in the George Bell Collection, there are records showing that surname. Even freebmd has only two Edwards, neither in SS:

Marriages Jun 1838
~~~~~~~~
Fleming  Edward    Durham  24 _9
~~~~~~~~
Births Mar 1859
~~~~~~~~
FLEMING  Edward     Sunderland  10a 409
Sorry not to be of more use
Jan
Jan, Thank you for that information but unfortuneatley the birth for Edward is too late as he married in 1861.
Hi Derek,
Have you found either of them in any of the other census - just wondering where your place of birth came from because I haven't been able to find them in the '51 or '71 in Durham
Any other clues would help
:)
Hi Ru,
I'd forgotten that this post was still on the list, I'm still learning :-[
I've now got a possible for Edward Fleming that came through a private posting, the information is:
1851 South Bishopwearmouth Sunderland Durham
HANNAH FLEMING    Hd    M    43    Master mariners wife   Monkwearmouth
Joseph Fleming       So      19    Joiner (app)      Monkwearmouth
William Fleming      So      17    plumber (app)      Monkwearmouth
Edward Fleming       So      15    boat builder (app)      Monkwearmouth
Jane Stevens       Sv      13   Servant         Monkwearmouth
Jane Golightly and Edward Fleming married in May 1861 and I've traced Jane with her family in 1851 & 1861 then as a married woman in 1871 to 1891. In the 1871 to 1891 Edward is not shown suggesting he was always at sea. He may have been home for the 1861 that would be about 6 weeks before the wedding on 16th May 1861.
Sorry for the confusion.
