Hi there,

I have a newspaper from 1916 in my possession and all the obituaries for the soldiers are accompanied by head and shoulder photographs of the deceased.

I don't know if this was a common practice throughout the country, but it is worth contacting the library/archives office local to the area your grandfather was from to ascertain their newspaper holdings.
