Did they or Did'nt they _ Quakers
« on: Friday 18 November 05 08:42 GMT (UK) »
I have a problem which I cant unravel.
My Reading ancestors or at least some of them ,according to old correspondence (1840-1860), were Quakers.
Trouble is that most of their baptisms are recorded and Quakers do not subscribe to baptism.
Is it because that there may have been a 'transition' period where folk who were about to,or considering to, take up Quakerism still undertook the usual rites of the COE church?

Although less likely to apply to Quakers there was a need in those days to establish yourself and your family as belonging to the parish.  In times of need you were totally dependent on your home parish and so Quakers may have felt the need to be baptised into the CoE even though it was totally meaningless to them in religious terms.

I think that is the critical point.  That it was meaningless to them and so would not cause a problem.
