Researching soldiers of ww1 & ww2
« on: Friday 18 November 05 17:14 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to trace two family members who served in the first world war and the second, they survived both.
How would I go about finding regiments they were in etc? Obviously, if a soldier was killed in the war, you can usually find them in cwgc, but is there a website that lists servicemen who survived. Unfortunately I dont know what regt they served in, all I know is that they lived in Manchester at the time of the wars. Their names were, John Joseph Duffy, and Charles Henry Johnson.
Any help very much appreciated.
Thanks, Benn.

Hi Hali-benny,

You could try the National Archive website as they have the WWI medal list which is searchable online.  I had a quick look and there are two entries for John Joseph Duffy, one of which may be the one you are after.

Hi Benn!

Do you have your WW1 soldier on the 1891 and 1901 census ?

Benn!

Why don't you try looking them up on the Lancashire board and see what you can find out ? sometimes the census will give information - give it a try and then we'll go from there - though somebody may be able to give you information in the meantime!
