Sussex Marriage Index lookup, please: John Blunden to Martha, c.1765
« on: Sunday 20 November 05 02:11 GMT (UK) »
Hello:
I'm trying to find out more about our 4XGr-grandfather John Blunden.  He seems to have moved between parishes, showing up at Coombes in by the 1760s.  He married a woman named Martha, family name unknown.  Could someone look for this marriage, or possible candidates, in the SMI, please?  I'm hoping to find out where the marriage took place and Martha's surname.  Their first child, James, was born in 1768.
Many thanks, in advance, for any assistance offered.
Regards,
Alison Causton

Hi Alison

The Saxons set up a fortified township here. It was thought to have been set up by Alfred the Great to ward off attacks by the Danes. Today, it is a charming village on the banks of the River Arun, near Arundel. A small village just three miles North East of Arundel

The church in Burpham was built up of various periods of time. Parts of the church date back from the 12th and 13th century. Although people were worshipping on this site before the Normans came and the Domesday Book mentions a church on this site.

And here are some great pics of St Marys Church

Enjoy....

Thank you, Suey, for the local perspective ;-).  These are fine photos and really do show up the different eras of construction.
The first pic shows a footpath to the church.  Do you call that a witten?  That's what I heard said when I visited Steyning two years ago.
Well done to Martin Snow!

Alison

I think it's nice to be able to see pictures of places that your ancestors may have known, glad you liked them.

;D - it's a twitten in Sussex.  Don't know if I'm right but I always thought it a corruption of betwixt and between.
