Hi again

Over the past few years I have been surveying, photographing, and transcribing the churchyards in Lewes, East Sussex.
The biggest yard is St John Sub Castro - it contains over 10,000 burials of which some 800 still have tombstones.
I am in the final stages of putting this all together, but having a quick look through the database I notice that 'Scrase' first appears in the burial registers in 1780 and there are at least 8 in this particular yard.
Other names that appear in the burial register for this particular church (1800 - 1993) are Fuller - 17 entries; Kemp - 12 entries; Lindfield - 3 entries; Marchant - 3 entries; Rogers - 11 entries and of course the Scrase entries. (.jpg attached of a Scrase headstone)
There are several more yards in Lewes including South Malling, All Saints, Southover, Cliffe, St Michaels, St Annes - and I know some of the names on your list appear in those burial registers and yards. There is a collection of Kemp tombs in South Malling dating from the 1600's and still in excellent readable condition.
Let me know if I can be of any further help to you
Chris in 1066Land (Hastings)

The Inscription on this stone is as follows:
In loving Remembrance/ of/ Emma the wife of/ Charles Scrase/ Who departed this life/ April 17 1884/ Aged 49 years/ 'Thou art my Father my God and/ The rest of my Salvation/

Hi

Attached to this is another .jpg of one of those kemp tombs in South Malling Churchyard.
It reads:
"HERE LYETH YE BODY OF/ MARY THE WIFE OF WILL/ IAM KEMPE THE ELDR SHE/ WAS BVRYED THE 8 DAY OF/ SEPTEMBER 1646/

There are 5 stones, on top of tombs, all grouped together.

Hi Chris
I would be very interested in any BORRER and SCRASE entries whatsoever. Also any BLAKER from Lewes (the Cuckfield ones are what appears to be a separate branch) would be very much appreciated. I assume entries are for individuals and do not refer to families. If I am wrong, then I will try and sort out the particular families I am interested in.

I am overcome by the kindness of your further offers, but I have so many possibilities to ask about that I could overwhelm you, so I will stick with the names above, with one addition, Katherine Louisa BEARD born about 1850 in Lewes according to the 1881 Census, father William.

I have only found one connection to South Malling: Barbara SCRASE married William (Henry?) HOLLINGDALE in 1782, but no known burials.

I noticed your WILSON coat of arms. I have a few WILSON linked to TURNER:
SarahW m WilliamT 1753
and ThomasW m SusannahT 1667
and I would love to discover if they were related as I am discovering lots of intermarriages over the centuries between my families of interest. Do they mean anything at all to you?

I cannot see the SCRASE headstone on the page. I assume it is the system and not me. Shame as the Kemp one is interesting. You are doing a marvellous job recording these.

Chris, thank you again
Regards Chris

Its him again!

Here are the Scrace entries for Cuckfield for the 1851 Census:

There are only two families in Cuckfield with the SCRACE surname and they look like they could be brothers plus their wives also came from the same village (Slaugham) - so could be two brothers marrying two sisters!!

HO107 1643 Folio 207, Little Bentley, Cuckfield.
SCRACE Richard, Head, Marr, 38, Farm Labourer, born Cuckfield
Elizabeth, Wife, Marr, 32, born Slaugham, SSX
James, Son, Unm, 10, born Cuckfield
John, Son, Unm, 8, born Cuckfield
Susan, Dau, Unm, 6, born Cuckfield
Esther, Dau, Unm, 2, born Cuckfield

HO107 1643 Folio 200, Scotland Cottage, Cuckfield
SCRACE William, Head, Marr, 34, Farm Labourer, born Cuckfield,
Sarah, Wife, Marr, 34, born Slaugham, SSX
Mary, Dau, Unm, 11, born Cuckfield
Priscilla, Dau, Unm, 9, born Cuckfield
Roda, Dau, Unm, 7, born Cuckfield
Sarah, Dau, Unm, 5, born Cuckfield
William, Son, Unm, 3, born Cuckfield
Esther, Dau, Unm, 10months, born Cuckfield

There is one single entry which looks very interesting:
Searse Mary, Servant, Unm, 21, House Servant, born Cuckfield
but she is a servant in the house of William Marchant, Baker/Farmer of 13 Acres and his wife Ann
(NB - that Searse could be a transcription error for Scrase)

Thats all for now - look forward to our next communication
