Swallows in New York from 1907
« on: Sunday 27 November 05 04:51 GMT (UK) »
My grandfather's aunt, Julia Swallow, emigrated from Hertfordshire to New York in September 1913 aged 19, going to a W.A Swallow at 1274 Atlantic Avenue Brooklyn.  We think this was her brother Walter (born 1881) who had gone to New York in 1907, and her brother Frank (born 1881) went in 1912.  Although Julia visited family in Hertfordshire in 1952, no one that I know remembers if she was married, or what her married name was.  I have tried writing to Swallows in Brooklyn now, but have had no replies.  Does anyone have some skills in tracking family in New York and have the time and inclination to help find what happened to Julia and her brothers?
thank you so much

Diane,  I have found Walter in the 1910 census, but it is virtually unreadable.  Most of the information is from the census index---I was able to read the name of the wife, dau, and his occupation.  In 1920 I have not been able to find any of your Swallows.  But, in 1930, Frank and Walter are in Fairfield County, Connecticut.  The transcriptions are below----Genealiza

1910   New York, Kings, Brooklyn, Ward 24
Series T 624   Roll 974   Page 86

farm, male, white, 42, marr, 32 yrs old at first
marr, can read, write, Eng, Eng, Eng, immig
1911, AL, spks Eng, chauffeur, private family,

Frank is a chauffeur for a lawyer and is living on the lawyer's farm.  The dwell # for the lawyer is the same, the family #differs by one.

There is also a listing for a Walter A Swallow who marries Feb 26, 1932, in Manhattan.  That is the only information I have on this individual.

thank you so much, that is a lot more than i could find.  I am figuring my way around english sources a bit, but US sources are way beyond me. it sounds like they stayed in the same business, the 2 brothers.
thanks again

Diane, Julia Swallow was my cousin's grandmother (not related to me though).  Since your original post is old, you may already have the info you need.  If not, I'll be glad to tell you what I know.

Hello Diane,

Never a problem in getting back to me whenever it's convenient for you.

I can’t reply to your PM because members must make at least three postings before being allowed to do so.  I’ve been a long time lurker but only registered to reply to your post as I thought you might like to hear from someone who actually knew your Julia Swallow.

My cousin’s grandmother is definitely your great-great aunt!

I will post this and then post again in a while in order to have those three postings so that I can use PM to give you more information since the family isn’t into genealogy research and I wouldn’t want to offend anyone.

Helen

Hello again Diane,

My cousin’s grandmother is the 9 year old Julia on the 1901 Census in Little Hadham.

She was born 25 November 1891 in Little Haddam and died 24 April 1988 in Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York.

She married Thomas Neary (b. 23 June 1888, County Mayo, Ireland; d. 13 July 1950, Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY) in 1916 in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY.  Sorry, I don’t have the exact date.

Assuming all is well with PM, I will continue there tomorrow.

Helen

There is at least one tree online by a person named Smith that includes Walter Swallow... I have not explored it completely, but it does include his parents and wife Ellen.

In 1920, my provider indexes him as Walter Swaller in:

FAIRFIELD  >  GREENWICH; GREENWICH
Series: T625  Roll: 177  Page: 136

Has the 3 children found by Genealiza in 1930.

I presume that you are just as interested in info about Frank and Walter as about Julia.  Since both Frank and Walter had male children, they might be easier to follow for current descendants.

If you search for "Mabel Swallow" in quotation marks on Google News Archives (http://news.google.com/archivesearch), her obituary comes up.

A New York Times article from 8 May 1939 says Katherine Swallow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Swallow of Greenwich, married Elmer Meilinggaard on Thursday in Virginia.  I found a death record for Katherine Swallow Meilinggaard on 5 Sep. 1969 in Germany.  I think I may have found living descendant(s) of this branch, so I'll send the info via private message.
