I'm told the Swallows lived across the street from us when I was little. Elmer Meilinggaard was the tax collector in Greenwich and I think Shelly has sent you details on his family who are still alive.

Diane, here’s an interesting - albeit sad - tidbit.

Even though the Swallows are not my family, I couldn’t help but look around for something other than censuses, etc.

In the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Tuesday, 07 April 1914, page 18, is the following “Acknowledgment” .....

“SWALLOW - Mr. and Mrs. Walter Swallow of 1278 Atlantic av wish to thank their many friends for their kind sympathy shown to them in their recent bereavement of their little daughter.”

I haven’t found a death notice for her, but I checked the NYC Death Index online and saw this listing -

Swallow Marguerite E    1 y    Apr 4  1914   Cert. No. 7341

Poor little girl, born and died between the 1910 Federal Census and the 1915 NY State Census and probably not known by all researchers.  How nice that those who didn’t know she existed are remembering her now at this time of year.

Helen

thank you all so much for all this information, especially Helen for that marriage and the children.  I have lots of leads to follow up, excellent.  My parents were just talking about Julia the other day, one of the last conversations she and my father had was regarding the suitability of Eisenhower for the presidency, they didnt see her after 1952.  Howard Swallow, her nephew, was my grandfather, and I cant help but think that she named her eldest son after him.  Howard was her oldest sister's illegitimate child, and was about 12 when Julia went to the U.S.  She offered to take him with her, Walter and Frank were already settled there, but Jane (Howard's mother) wouldnt let him go.  Thank you all so much, my parents will be thrilled to know that she married and had children -- they obviously never discussed so prosaic matters, politics being so much more riveting.

Nick, how would I access that tree with Walter in it?  Is it through rootschat?  sorry to be thick.  i did like the way you spelt his name "swaller", my mother tells the story of being chastised at school for pronouncing her name that way!

Seems to be a quite extensive website on Swallow research.

You’re welcome, Diane; glad I could help some.

Eisenhower and 1952 - wow, that IS a long time ago!  “...they obviously never discussed so prosaic matters, politics being so much more riveting”  LOL!  Interesting story about Howard, and I bet you’re right that their first born was named after your grandfather.  I wonder if my cousin’s family even knows about Mrs. N. offering to take him to the US with her.  How could anyone not be into their family’s history; it’s SO interesting!

I tried to attach two pictures, but the Attach box won't come up.  If you want me to e-mail them to you directly, you can write to me at my e-mail address -

If you do, I won't give your address to anyone.

Best Wishes for successful researching in 2011, Diane!

thank you Nick, I will follow that up.  And thank you Helen.  I tried to send you a photo too, but could not make it work.  I am not at home at the moment, but will use the personal message system to see if i can send it to you, and would love to see yours.  I sent on the info to my mother and she was absolutely thrilled
