1881 Census - Martha Susannah Palmer
« on: Tuesday 29 November 05 22:46 GMT (UK) »
Can some one help my wife to find this ancestor of her's in the 1881 Census. We have been Struggling to find her for some time.

Her name is Martha Susannah Palmer who was born at Coleshill, Warwickshire about 1857.  She married Alfred Tranter (who I have traced in the census) later in 1881 and I have an inscribed teapot presented to her on that occasion by a Mr. and Mrs Pike - could she have been in Service with them?

If anyone can help me to trace her in this census it would be really appreciated.
The main names that I am researching into at the moment are Cadman,(originating from Bulkington, Warwickshire), Smedley, (Leicestershire and Derbyshire), Paynes (Leicestershire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire) and Udall - you will also find several other names on my web page. I look forward to E-Mails from anyone who would like to share or talk about our family history.

Do you have the marriage certificate?

WHERE did it take place?
Were there any addresses given? -(please supply. At the moment you don't even give a clue as to which county it might be in)

Thank you for the repllies.

She married in June 1881 in Meriden, Wks.
Her father was John Palmer (born about 1820)  probably an Inn Keeper, her mother's name was probably Charlotte.

If you can find her in the 1881 or earlier censuses it would be appreciated

Have now found her in the 1871 census - her name was transcibed wrong. She was living at the Railway Inn, Forgemills, Warwickshire with her father John and brothers: John, Arthur, Charles, William  and sisters Claraand  Ellen.

Can she be found in 1881?

Hey.
In 1881 at The ForgeMills Hotel, Coleshill, Warwick lived -
Ann Palmer Head Widow age 41 b.Whitacre, Warwick Innkeeper
Ellen Palmer Stepdaughter Unm 24 b.Birmingham
Charles Palmer Stepson Unm 19 b.Coleshill Occ - Miller
William J Palmer Stepson Unm 14 b.Coleshill Scholar
Harry Palmer Son 6 b.Coleshill Scholar
Walter G Palmer Son 2 b.Coleshill

Ann must have been john's second wife? And John must of died between 1878 and 1881 (due to birth of walter). Haven't been able to find Martha yet, but i'll keep looking! I'll try looking for her other siblings that you found in 1871 to see if she is with them.

Hey.
I think i may of found Martha! Hurrah!

In 1881 at 21 London Street Sussex Hotel, London, Middlesex were-
Christopher PIKE 42 Head b.Dawlish, Devon Licensed Victualler
Eliza PIKE 42 Wife b.Castle Morten, Worcester
SUSAN PALMER 23 Unm b.Page Mills, Worcester Barmaid
Elizabeth Garrison 23 Unm b.Brighwell, Oxford General Servant
William Wiett 32 Unm b.Westminster, Middlesex Pot man

I'm certain this is her, using her middle name Susannah. Also she's living with the Pike's which you mentioned gave her a teapot when she married. Wonder why she was in London? Did she marry Alfred in London or did she return to Warwick? I'm curious now!!
