York & Lancs Regt/56th Foot
« on: Thursday 01 December 05 10:00 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Athey appears on the 1891 cencus in the Barracks at Tanshelf Pontefract, where he is listed as a Private Yorks & Lancs Regt.

In 1893 on his daughter's birth certificate he is a Private in the 56th Foot Regiment and his address is the Barracks Pontefract.

Are the Yorks & Lancs Regt and the 56th Foot Regt one and the same?  Were there two barracks at Pontefract?

Be glad if someone could clear this up.

Thank you

Susan

The York & Lancs was formed in 1881 from the 65th and 84th regiments of foot.  The 56th were incorperated into the Essex Regiment.

I wonder if it was meant to say '65th' but somebody got their numbers mixed up?
