Slightly off-topic, but...
« on: Monday 06 September 04 08:16 BST (UK) »
This is a question I've been dying to ask but couldn't find anywhere that was really suitable so I guess it belongs here?

On another forum I visit there's a small section devoted to websites.  If someone has a problem with their site then they ask others on the forum for help & advice.  One of my other hobbies is designing and creating websites and as I'm researching and finding out new information I'm adding it to a private site for family to view - it contains information about living relatives and my ultimate goal is to produce a CD-ROM for the family with our history.

Seeing that so many people on here have made web sites of their family trees I'm surprised there isn't a small section here?

That would be a good idea !

I mentioned on the topic "Why do we do it" that I write up my information in a hypertext book, which I burn onto CD for the family.

I was asked how I did it, which software etc. As a hypertext book is basically an offline website, the principles are the same for both.

So a board/section for help and advice for websites (for those "going public") and for hypertext books (for those who prefer to keep it in the family) would be a great idea, and a great help !

And while we are on the subject of new Boards:

Maybe not just websites, but for technical help in general ... ?
i.e.  A "technical help" board, where members with computer and software problems can post their queries

and also a "suggestion box", which is just the place for topics like this !

That's a really good idea.

I'm not very computer literate and would like to have somewhere to ask these sort of questions. I don't like to fiddle around with things I don't really know about, as it could end up an expensive mistake

I completely agree - even tech help is really expensive now just to phone up and find out why Windows is behaving strangely.

I've got over 20 years experience with computers (from programming to building the things) and I'd be more than happy to offer whatever help I could.  I use both Apple Mac and all versions of Windows-based machines.

I was sent a disc with family history on it from my cousin in Australia, she keeps asking me have I looked at it yet.  When I put it in it says register, and she told me not to, so I still haven't seen it!
I too worry about clicking on things in case I make a boo boo, I've a lot to learn yet, and the new site suggested would be a great help to us scardy pants!

What a good idea,
perhaps we could have a tutorial?
I'm computer literate, and have used them for years, use most programs, but not Apple or Mac, but since stopped work a few years ago for health reasons, have not caught up with html or designing web sites.  Any expertise or guidance would be great. :)
Have not been researching family for long either, so have only used 1 software program - from LDS would like to know how others organise themselves before splashing out on new program.
Thanx,
Newbie

I've just been re-reading some of the comments in "Your free Webpages on RootsChat.com?"

Bearing in mind how many have said variations of

"I would like to, but I would need help / an idiots guide / etc",

it looks like a board for web-site help would really fill a need !
