« on: Saturday 03 December 05 13:37 GMT (UK) »
Hey
Would someone be able to look up this family on the 1851 census for me please?

William Hicks b1802/1803 in Taunton, wife Elizabeth, not sure when she was born but i think the place may have been Taunton aswell, daughter Mary Ann b 1848 in Taunton.

Sorry, i don't have an address, but i guess it would be Taunton?!

Thanks muchly for your help,
Jacdee

Hey
Thanks for such a quick reply!
Theres more children there than i realised! Gives me more people to investigate!
Just looking at their ages, i'd guess that elizabeth was either lying about her age or was the second wife!
Strange that their birth years don't match with their ages? Is that a common error on censuses?
I've a lot more researching to do now!

Thanks again for your help, you're a star!

Hello Jacdee

Been trying to find this family in 1841 Somerset............no luck

If Elizabeth's age is right in 1851?...........William has been married before! his son Josiah aged 20 (20-25=20 in 1841) is not seen either!
I also tried Jo* without any luck ......... in Somerset

and Edith is not seen anywhere in Somerset 1841 (let alone Taunton!) and she doesn't appear to have been mistranscribed.........I went through A*- Z* as a surname without anything close to look at!

What does the 1861 census reveal?

Regards

Hi,
Thanks so much for trying to help!
In 1861 i have
William Hicks b1803 Hertsmonceux, sussex
Elizabeth Hicks b1819 Williton, Somerset
Mary Ann Hicks b.1848 Taunton
Edward Hicks b.1850 Taunton
Henry Hicks b.1852 Taunton
Gideon Hicks b.1853 Taunton
Walter Hicks b.1855 Taunton
Ester Hicks b.1860 Taunton
They were living at Mile Lane, Bishops Hill, Taunton.

I haven't been able to find Josiah, Edith, Eliezer or Betsey on the 1861. I'm guessing that Edith and Betsey would of been married by 1861 anyway. And i think Eliezer might be a miss spelling of Elinger (i've found a John Elinger Hicks born 1840 which could be him? However, his birth was registered in Dover, Kent so i'm not sure? And there is an Elenyer Hicks on the 1881 census whose birth year is 1839 and it says he was born in Tunbridge wells, kent and he is living in Taunton....its a possible, but not a definate...yet!) So maybe the family were in Kent in 1841? Its never easy is it?!

From 1861 to 1901, there is an Ebenezer Hicks with family at Taunton. Born  Kent Tunbridge Wells. 1 of his children is called Josiah.

Hi Tanja
Thanks! That does look like it could be Josiah, his age and that of Edith fit well with what i had. Its just confusing when they change their place of birth!

What year of birth did ebenezer have? I've a feeling he could well be a brother of Josiah.
I've just found details of an Alfred Hicks b1828 in Tunbridge wells and a William Hicks b1826 also in Tunbridge wells and i'm almost certain they are brothers of Josiah (their fathers name was William and mother was Elizabeth!). Just a shame they weren't living at home on the 1851 census!
