Hello there,

Have just discovered his real name was George!!!
In fact George Victor William ROGERS- what a mouthful  Known as Victor.
He died age 56 in Harrow in 1951-so I don't think he was on the Umpire when it sunk(unless some survived?)

He had two brothers also in the navy.

Looked around via google at various HMS Umpire info sites: It seems 9 men of 31 survived.

A quote from http://www.divernet.com/travel/1001norfolk.htm:

"HMS Umpire was a U-class submarine, rammed in error by the trawler Peter Henriks on 19 July, 1941, just nine days after it was commissioned and on its first night at sea."

So it almost seems probable that he was one of the survivors, in which case the photo might be of special interest to navy historians.

George originally signed up in 1912 age 17 for 12 years-after serving on many ships in WW1 and beyond, he finally left on 9 Oct 1928(he must have loved it!)

By then he had a young family and had moved nearer to London.

If it was the same ship as the one he served on ,he must have been very sad to hear it had been sunk in 1941.

By the way, he served on the Umpire from Aug 1917 to Mar 1919,so the pic must have been taken bewteen those dates.

"I'll get you, Google"... The Umpire I found even was a submarine.
How do I navigate out of this with this without examining my brain/eyes..
Let's see..  Compliment the navy on their timeless uniforms..
hmm.. no.. I'll file a complaint about their vessel naming habits instead!

Google doesn't seem to want to give its information too freely about this particular HMS Umpire, does it? I had to try several sneaky searches before I finally found any record of the correct one.

She was a Modified R Class destroyer of the 6th Division, 13th Destroyer Flotilla, Grand Fleet, and her pendant number was F26. She was launched on 9th June 1917 and completed in August 1917, so Uncle Victor would have been a member of her first crew.

This is the closest I could find to a picture of her. Its the same class of vessel and she'd have looked almost identical other than her number.
