My Great Grandfather was Isaac Favell, brother to Elizabeth and son of James Favell. I too have reached a dead end in this line as I have been unable to find the parents of James, born 1825 in Biggleswade according to the 1861 census for Leighton Buzzard. Any help would be much appreciated. Have managed to trace my other family line, the Bull Family, back to 1669.

Hi Pauline

Welcome to Rootschat

I couldn't find any trace of James in Biggleswade when I looked in 2005, and nothing seems to have changed.

Do you have his 1845 marriage certificate to Jane Coleman from which you ought to get his father's name?

  Thanks Steven ...

yes thats the family in 1841.

William Favill (as spelt) married Elizabeth Sadler 7th Feb 1820
  at Hornby by Bedale Yorks
Elizabeth was baptised in 1798 in Bedale to Robert Sadler & his wife Catherine
a Robert Sadler is baptised in 1759 in Bedale but as yet unproven as to being him.
Now it gets interesting I have all the census records for the family and every one accounted for.... a daughter Mary Ann who dies between 1871 * 1881 census death recorded as aged 26 last qt 1876.
I was playuing around with names on the Bedfordshire & Luton Archives site and entered Favel into the records search for Bedford Gaol.
Up came Jane Favel aged 51 1876  wilful murder no true bill
George Favell aged 22 1876 wilful murder no true bill
Jane Favel aged 51 1877 acquitted. As I knew of only 1 Jane Favel at this time little bells rang. My 3xgreat grandmother was charged with the murder of her own daughter Mary Ann in 1876. Also charged was son George and his future wife Catherine Samuel who married in 4th qt 1877.
The newspaper descriptions from the time paint the story vivid black.
The body had been found early on a Sunday morning at around 7am, Mary Ann was found face down still clutching in her hand small change however the body was burnt almost to a cinder.Of her clothing only the cuff on her wrist was visible.
That night 7 family members had been in the house Jane/ George/Charles/Isaac/Eliza/Ellen&Henry, when questioned none heard a noise ...a scream...could smell a fire ...or the burning flesh.....Witnesses and neighbours gave there versions one claim to hear a scream or cry at around 4am someone else heard a thud at around the same time no two stories seemed to tally. The trial lasted from October 1876 until July 1877.
The judge said of the case that it puzzled human ability to solve and unless the jury found there was no shadow of doubt they could not find the prisoner guilty of wilful murder. The jury left to consider its verdict returning 57 minutes later to declare a verdict of not guilty.
I am still reading everything that I can find on the case to give Jane her own little section in the tree. It just goes to show ...read between the lines... fill in the gaps... who knows what you may find.
Welcome to a now very interesting little family.

Hi folks,
With the information in this topic I have had some success in finding many relatives.
However!!!!!!! Cannot find any trace of Patience or Comfort Favell born in 1836 after the 1951 census. There appears to be no record of marriages or deaths, so  failing alien abduction, I am totally stumped.

  Hi Pollyanna....

Just caught your post. I think I have tracked Comfort but unless I order lots of certs I cannot fully prove.
have a look at these entries in the census I have posted about it on here under heading of
Have I found Comfort?  posted 10 April 2008
  1841 & 1851 you have ...so ..
1861 THIS IS THE STICKIEST ENTRY.. as Emma Atkins
1871 Emma Favell ok name wrong but follow 1881 entry and names repeat
           1871 can be found RG10/1573 F 14 P19
           1881 can be found RG11/1649 F 78 P33 shown as Comfort Atkins
  1891 this time Comfort Atkins born Woburn at RG12/1273 F 16 P26
 1901 as Comfort Flavell at RG13/1514 F 85 P29.
She changes birth places and the Comfort to Emma well... but the constant appearence of the girls and then Cyril pulls it together.
Patience marries in Weymouth district in 1856 to Joseph Devouta (various spelling in census) her death is registered as Patience De Voute in 1917 birth as 1838.
