Hi

There are quite a lot of Samuel Whites in Nottinghamshire, however in Mansfield there is only this one, right age, ages were rounded down to the nearest five in the 1841 census.

All born in county

Samuel White, age 25, baker
Hannah White age 30
John White age 7
Mary White age 5
Ann White age 6 months
John Holloway age 11

Cock Pit
Mansfield
HO107 0859
folio 3/36 page 3

I think you may need more information before you presume that this is the right Samuel.

I see that this Samuel was married to an Ann in 51 and 61, and in the latter census described himself as baker and butcher. Like Nicky I couldn't see any others that fit, so .....from the Notts FHS indexes

baptisms at Mansfield to Samuel and Hannah White, father a baker
15/10/1834 John Barratt
15/05/1836 Mary
02/02/1838 Arabella born 25/01/1838
27/11/1839 William born 17/11/1839
13/01/1841 Ann
05/10/1842 Elizabeth

baptisms at Mansfield to Samuel and Ann/Anne, father a baker
Thomas Cooper 12/11/1845 born 05/11/1845
William Henry 24/05/1848
Kate Maria 08/11/1850

Marriage Samuel White and Ann Cooper Mansfield St Peter 11/05/1845

possible for earlier marriage
Samuel White and Hannah Coop Newark 03/06/1830

One baptism at Newark
01/03/1831 William to Samuel and Hannah, if this is the same couple

I hope some of this fits :)

Patricia....Patricia White perhaps?
Are you still searching WHITE in Mansfield? I have just found your postings dated 2007 and I am curious to know what you have found.
Samuel White, the butcher/baker, is my great great grandfather. His son, Charles James White, my great grandfather, was born in 1859. In the 1861 census you'll see that they are living at 35 Albert Street but you have to turn the page to see my grandfather.
CJW married Elizabeth Randall in Mansfield in 1884. They had three children, Maude, Beatirice(Beate) and James. The two girls were born in Mansfield but my grandfather, James, was born in Sheffield in 1892. This is where he lived, married, worked and died in 1943.
However back to Samuel White. I think he might have died in 1896 but need to confirm this. I have found Samuel White on the 1891 cenus; and thus believe that his death was in 1896.
I have a photograph of my greatgrandfather, CJ White, if you'd like to see this.

Have you found out anything about this possible marriage:Newark 1830 to Hannah Coop? I imagine that you've found the entry in the record?
yours
Paul

My Great Grandfather was John B. White, born in England in 1834.  Somewhere in my research and I am not sure where, the B. became Barratt. (I did this years ago before I became careful - and now I cannot find the documentation!)  So I found this John Barratt, son of Samuel and Hannah and it may be him.  My John B White came to Delaware in the mid 1800s and married a woman from Scotland. He was a plumber. Does anyone know what happened to John Barratt White on this census?  Could he have come to America? My John B named his firstborn son Samuel.  He also lives near a William White from England, about the same age as this family's William.

My mother has DNA tested and was wondering if anyone in this family has also tested to compare?
Thanks for your help!

I am also looking for information about Samuel and Ann White, my gggrandparents.  As far as I can determine, they lived on Cock Pit Street in Mansfield from their marriage until at least when the street name changed to Albert Street (in 1861 census).  Samuel is listed as a butcher and baker, and the premises at no 35 Albert Street was recently a public house.

I was wondering if they were related to Thomas and Elizabeth White of "White Bear Cockpit Street" - in the 1861 census Elizabeth is employing Ann (possibly daughter of Samuel and Ann) as a domestic servant, in the Old White Bear inn on the then Albert Street.
