Jenner. Standish
« on: Friday 09 December 05 13:39 GMT (UK) »
It's a long shot, I know... but does anyone have access to the Standish church records?

I'm researching the Jenners who moved to Cheetham, Manchester in the latter half of the 19thC, but I know they are descended from Thomas Jenner, born c1817 in Standish. I've found a tree online which identifies all the Standish Jenners in the census returns EXCEPT Thomas.

Basically, there seems to have been 2 married couples of the name having children around the right time, Nathaniel Jenner and Elizabeth Martin, and William Jenner & Sarah Gingell.

Nathaniel and Elizabeth had a son called Thomas in 1825, who died in 1849, so they can't have had a son called Thomas in 1818.

Sarah Gingell/Jenner was living in Hardwicke in 1851, as was Thomas, which does provide more circumstantial evidence that she was his mother.

The problem is that the other research online doesn't identify his as William & Sarah's son (though one has him in the ged file as an unconnected individual)... and I can't rule out the possibility that he might be an illegitimate son of one of the Standish Jenner sisters (perhaps not being baptised as a result, explaining the inability to place him).

Can anyone help at all? I'd be very grateful

Hi

I think this could add to your idea that Thomas was the son of William and Sarah, unfortunately though the 1841 does not give relationships. Please also remember that the ages in the 1841 are rounded down to the nearest 5.

1841 census

Sarah Jenner, age 60, born in county
Daniel Jenner, age 25, butcher, born in county
Thos Jenner, age 20, tailor, born in county

Hardwick PB
Hardwick
HO 107 0370
folio 19 page 14

I hope this helps

Ally, many thanks for the burial info, I will add those to the info I have... and Nicky... what can I say???? That's perfect! We know Thomas was a tailor, so that definitely confirms the family relationship.

Now I can confirm his place amongst these Standish Jenners, I'm able to latch into established research which takes this family back to the Elizabethan era.

We'd always wanted to find the link to Edward Jenner (who invented the vaccination), though we quickly found that there was no direct descendancy (as none of Edward's sons had children), but this line does go back to Francis Jenner, whose 2nd son was named Ansel (born 1610). Edward Jenner also has an ancestor of the same name, born 1625, so it seems almost certain that the 2 Ansels were closely related, possibly cousins named after a common grandfather.

Many thanks to you both for the information.

I have some of the Standish parish records on microfiche and can confirm that William and Sarah Jenner are the parents of Thomas Jenner. He was christened on the 19th April 1818.

Hello All
I am also descended from Jenners of Standish, Haresfield etc. My gt gt grandmother was Suzannah Martin Jenner, daughter of Nathaniel (b.1790) and Elizabeth Martin.
The children I have listed for them were:

Nathaniel Jenner 1821 – 1905 married Jane Bishop*
Samuel Jenner 1821 –
Edwin Jenner 1822 –
Henry Jenner 1826 –
Elizabeth Jenner Jnr 1828 –
SUZANNAH MARTIN JENNER 1829 – 1909 married Thomas Bishop*
Martin Jenner 1830 –
Charles Jenner 1835 –

NOTES: * Jane and Thomas were siblings, dau/son of John Bishop and Elizabeth (Morgan ?)

If there is any information to prove or disprove my thinking that Nathaniel's father was Thomas Jenner (B. abt 1761) and his father was Robert .... ???... I would be grateful of any pointers!

ALSO for Nathaniel (b.1790) I have his death as 1849 not 1859 and Elizabeth is listed as a widow in the 1851 census which would confirm this.
although thank you to Alli for the other information which I found very useful. :)

Hi Impy,
I haven't looked at subsequent replies received so far, but would like to add my findings, which I hope will be of some help?
Source: Gloucestershire Family History Society (GFHS) Baptism Index, 1813-1837:-
Thomas JENNER, son of William & Sarah, a Butcher of Standish, baptised at St Nicholas, Standish, 19th April, 1818.
Daniel JENNER, son of William & Sarah, a Butcher of Haresfield, baptised at St Peter, Haresfield, 11th December 1814.
Sarah JENNER, daughter of William & Sarah, a Butcher of Hardwicke, baptised at St Nicholas, Hardwicke, 16th June 1822.
I found NO trace of William & Sarah's marriage.
