« on: Wednesday 08 September 04 12:50 BST (UK) »
Hi I am looking for info on a family from Ely, Cambridgeshire

Whyatt Stanford b. 1786   Ely he married Mary Gotobed in 1804. They were living in Newham St, Ely in 1851.

They had 10 children in all but I presume they would be all married by now the youngest was married in 1849.

there were only 3 sons who I also want to see if they were in Ely still

William Stanford chr 1807 in Ely
John     Stanford chr 1817 in Ely
Edward Stanford couldn't find a christening for him

Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi Anjo,

do you know this site already:

http://contueor.com/wisbech/transcripts/index.htm

Loads of data about Wisbech and the Fenlands.
including a marriage of a John Gotobed in 1802 - relative of Mary ??

also, Wisbech is sometimes Cambridge, Sometimes Norfolk, so try this site aswell:

http://www.genealogy.doun.org/transcriptions/index.php

There is a massive Surname index here, including one Gotobed:
Place Register Year Surname, Forename Age No. Notes

Burials (Parish Register)

Wisbech District Tilney cum Islington
 1610 GOTOBED, Henry

That'll give you something to strive for, proving a link there !

Good Hunting !

p.s.
I saw somewhere that Wisbech in fact borders on Camb., Norfolk and Lincolnshire, and the boundaries change often, so you may need to extend your search into all three counties

Hi Anjo

I've just tried looking up my Archive CD books CDRom set of the Cambs 1861 census only to find that the piece which includes Ely is missing - I've asked them if this means that the original was lost/damaged by the PRO, which if so means that you will be out of luck, I'm afraid.

Sorry!

David

Thanks David for looking for me, Thats a shame about the census. I will just have to hope they all moved!!! Chances are that some are in the London area, one daughter was and 2 other daughters had gone to Australia. Anyway thanks very much for your time and effort much appreciated. All the best Angela.

Hi, firstly I am informed that the 1861 census for Ely were damaged in flooding so do not exist but thankfully I found my Wyatt Stanford and his wife they were living in Shoreditch, London next door to their daughter Sarah who was married to Edward Mack.

Wyatt Stanford/ Stamford died in Ely, Cambridgeshire 15 Feb 1871 a month before the census does any one have access to the 1871 census to see if his wife was still alive
Mary Stanford she would be about 84. or any other Stanfords. In or about the Holy Trinity area of Ely. Did the Macks move to Ely to be with the dying Wyatt

Edward Mack b. 1824 London
Sarah   Mack  b. 1827 Ely, Cambridgeshire

Thanks for all your help so far and I hope you can find time to help me just a little bit more. Thanks anjo
