Griffin surname

I have discovered that my ancestor PATRICK GRIFFIN was born in 1840 in Kerry the family then left to live in newport South Wales
Does anyone know of this griffin Family

Hello guncher,

If you're unable to find someone that knows your Griffin family there are three items required when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish.
3. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as your ancestors were born before Civil Registration was introduced in Ireland. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

I have 3 Patrick Griffins on my Tree. Born 1880,1879,and 1846.
Origionally from Ballyferriter/Castlegregory area.

Griffin is a common Irish surname and is one of the most common surnames in Co. Kerry. In this case
I think the clan is called Ó Grifín in Irish. My family are from Co. Clare and we are the Ó Gríofa.

My maternal line is Griffin on both sides...both from Listowel/Duagh area in North Kerry.  If you pin your Griffins down to that area I'll see if I have any info that might help.

We now known, from Y-DNA testing, that the Griffin surname in County Kerry descends from a man who left the Scottish Highlands in the late middle ages.

You can confirm whether or not your Griffin paternal line ancestry comes from the County Kerry group. centered around Castlemaine, by having Y-DNA analysis.  If you fall under the R-A13315 haplogroup, your are a County Kerry Griffin.

If you've been tested by 23andme on their v5 chip, an R-S764 haplogroup result for a male from a Griffin paternal line, is a pretty good indicator that your paternal ancestors came from the County Kerry group.
