« on: Friday 16 December 05 22:03 GMT (UK) »
PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PHOTO OF THE RAYNERS TRAVELLING THEATRE CIRCA 1888. THE FAMILY PERFORMED AT SNEINTON AT EASTER TIME AND MOVED ON TO THE GOOSE FAIR IN OCTOBER, ALSO MOVING AROUND TO PLACES LIKE ILKESTON, EASTWOOD, HEANOR AND LONG EATON. SOME OF THE FAMILY RETIRED AROUND THE EASTWOOD, UNDERWOOD AREA, WOULD APPRECIATE IF ANYONE OUT THERE HAS ANY INFORMATION HOWEVER LITTLE. TEDDY RAYNER TOOK OVER FROM HIS FATHER SAMUEL IN THE LATE 1880's AND THE SHOW WAS RECOLLECTED IN THE EARLY MEMORIES OF D H LAWRENCE WHEN THEY PLAYED IN EASTWOOD, BIRTHPLACE OF THE WRITER.

Hi Gary

It was the notes at the side of the photo I thought you would be interested in. Have you asked at the archives in Nottm? If not I'll ask next time I am there.

Hi,

I think Jane means that if you search the Picture the past web site for Rayners then your picture comes up. If you then click on the thumbnail a small commentary appears.

Hi Gary

I had a look at the archives but no reference to Rayners Travelling Theatre. I looked under theatre, travel, drama, Goose Fair, Rayners.

I realise I'm replying to a very old thread here. I'm just wondering if anyone ever discovered the provenance of the original photograph entitled Teddy Rayners mobile theatre (close examination suggests it might be from a newspaper). Also does anyone have a confirmed key to who all the individuals are?

The Picture the Past website suggests that it was dated about 1910

Thank you
