Ballygowan (Ballygoun)
« on: Friday 16 December 05 22:55 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know anything about a place or farm called Ballygowan by Oban. My great=grandfather was married in Oban in 1884 and his usual residence was down as Ballygowan by Oban and his occupation was ploughman. I don't know if it was the name of a village or if it was the name of a farm. Any suggestions.

Hi Dorie

There's a Ballygown in Mull (27 miles from Oban airport according to Street Map!).  Have a look at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ for an 1875 Ordnance Survey map location. Go to Argyll on the Gazetteer and from there to an alpha listing. Ballygown is the only thing coming up as a possible place name.

Regards.
